Job Overview
We are looking for an experienced Retail Store Designer to lead the design and execution of store development projects. This role involves end-to-end responsibility from concept design, construction drawings, permitting, to on-site coordination and project close-out. This role requires strong technical drawing capabilities, familiarity with U.S. permitting processes, and the ability to coordinate with multiple stakeholders including landlords, project managers, and regulatory authorities.
Key Responsibilities
Design & Documentation
- Lead store space design in accordance with SI (Store Identity) guidelines
- Independently develop design concepts, renderings, and full construction drawing sets
- Translate and localize overseas design drawings to meet U.S. codes and permitting requirements
- Produce high-quality, efficient design solutions for retail/F&B environments
Project Execution
- Support and oversee store fit-out and construction process
- Conduct site surveys, measurements, and existing condition verification with Project Managers
- Manage on-site design coordination, respond to RFIs, and implement design changes during construction
Permitting & Compliance
- Prepare and submit drawings for permit approvals
- Ensure compliance with NYC building codes and relevant regulations
- Communicate with expeditors, government agencies, and review authorities
- Revise drawings per landlord and city comments
Coordination
- Coordinate with landlord review teams, consultants, and internal stakeholders
- Align design intent with construction feasibility, materials, and cost considerations
Project Close-Out
- Complete final drawing sign-off after construction
- Ensure all as-built drawings and documentation are finalized and archived
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree or above in Architecture, Interior Design, Environmental Design, or related field
- Licensed designer/architect or eligible for licensure in New York State (strongly preferred)
- Minimum 5 years of experience in retail or commercial space design
- Experience with F&B or leading consumer brands is a strong plus
Skills & Competencies
- Strong understanding of commercial/retail space design principles
- Up-to-date knowledge of design trends, materials, and construction methods
- Ability to balance design quality with cost and constructability
- Excellent technical design and drawing capabilities
- Strong communication and on-site coordination skills
Software Requirements
Proficient in:
- AutoCAD
- SketchUp
- 3ds Max
- Adobe Photoshop & Illustrator
- Familiarity with additional design and office software tools
Preferred
- Experience adapting international brand standards to U.S. projects
- Multi-state project experience (NY required; CA/MA is a plus but more complex)
- Bilingual in English and Chinese (Mandarin) is a plus
