Duties
- Review and interpret medical records to assign appropriate ICD-10, CPT (Current Procedural Terminology), and DRG (Diagnosis-Related Group) codes accurately for billing purposes.
- Ensure all coding aligns with current industry standards and payer requirements to maximize reimbursement.
- Prepare and submit clean claims using Electronic Medical Record (EMR) or Electronic Health Record (EHR) systems, maintaining compliance with HIPAA regulations.
- Follow up on unpaid or rejected claims through effective medical collection procedures, resolving discrepancies promptly.
- Verify patient insurance coverage and eligibility before submitting claims to streamline the billing process.
- Maintain detailed documentation of all coding activities, edits, and correspondence related to billing cases.
- Collaborate with healthcare providers to clarify diagnoses or procedures when necessary for precise coding.
- Stay updated on changes in medical coding guidelines, insurance policies, and industry regulations to ensure ongoing compliance.
- Assist in managing medical records requests and ensuring accurate record keeping for audits or patient inquiries.
- Support the training of new staff on coding protocols and EMR/EHR systems as needed.
- Perform collection activities on past due accounts
Qualifications
- Proven experience in medical billing and coding within a primary care setting with familiarity using EMR/EHR systems.
- Strong knowledge of medical terminology, anatomy, and physiology to accurately interpret clinical documentation.
- Expertise in ICD-10 and CPT coding systems
- Experience with medical records management and understanding of insurance claim processes.
- Ability to navigate complex billing procedures including medical collection efforts when necessary.
- Excellent attention to detail to ensure accuracy in coding and documentation.
- Good communication skills for collaborating with healthcare providers, insurance companies, and patients.
- Knowledge of medical office operations is preferred; certification such as CPC (Certified Professional Coder) is a plus.
