Overview

Under general supervision, the EH&S Technician will support the institute in the areas of environmental safety and health ensuring compliance with city, state and federal regulations. The EH&S Technician will conduct radiation surveys and conduct radiation training for employees. Performs noise surveys and laboratory safety inspections. Collects, analyzes, ships and packs samples. The ES&H Technician will collect, sort and prepare wastes for disposal and will be responsible for maintaining equipment for emergencies and will respond to accidents such as spills, fires, and falls.

Qualifications

High School diploma or equivalent and a minimum of one year of related work experience in industrial hygiene or safety; or 2 years of related work experience working in a laboratory setting; or an equivalent combination of education, training and/or experience from which comparable knowledge, skills and abilities have been attained.

Must have a basic understanding of general safety, fire safety, industrial hygiene and/or environmental safety. Knowledge of OSHA, DOT, EPA, NRC and DOE regulations preferred.

Must have superior professional-level written and verbal communication skills; a high degree of professionalism, excellent judgment, problem-solving and decision-making skills. Demonstrated ability in managing a wide variety of tasks and projects simultaneously while meeting multiple deadlines is required. Must have the ability to work independently and as a part of a team. Preferred computer proficiency with Microsoft Excel, Word, Internet Explorer, Outlook and the ability to learn department-specific computer systems as needed.

Physical Requirements

Work is performed in a variety of settings including office and laboratory environments, as well as in outdoor areas. Will frequently stand, walk, sit, kneel, crawl, climb (ladders, scaffolds, etc.), reach/work overhead, frequently lift/carry/push/pull heavy objects that weigh up to 50 pounds and perform desk-based computer tasks. Will wear personal protective equipment which may include a respirator. Will work in close proximity to an environment containing research animals and will be required to work in areas where hazardous materials and/or infectious agents are present which may require vaccinations.
