Summary Objective

The purpose of this position is to install, configure, repair, and upgrade HVAC controls systems.

Investigate diagnostic testing, repair and resolution of system and infrastructure issues. Mentors HVAC

Technicians on building automation activities. Properly completes the required project and service

documentation.

This class works independently, under limited supervision, reporting major activities through periodic

meetings.

Essential Functions

The essential functions listed below are those that represent the majority of the time spent working in this class. Management may assign additional functions related to the type of work of the class, as necessary.

  • Diagnoses and repairs complex control system malfunctions requiring extensive knowledge of a variety of electronic or digital controls systems and ability to test and write programming in multiple Building Automation Systems.
  • Provide sketches of field changes and discrepancies for engineering corrections and drawings.
  • Report problems or changes to Energy Manager immediately. Interfaces with Energy Manager, Energy Analyst, HVAC Supervisors, HVAC Mechanics, and contractors to coordinate activities as required in an ethical and professional manner.
  • Delivers manuals and documentation to the Energy Manager.
  • Mentors and trains mechanical workforce on building automation systems. Provides support to the mechanical staff for troubleshooting mechanical equipment that interfaces with controls systems.
  • Conducts self-study to improve and maintain technical proficiency in systems utilized in Louisville Metro Government.
  • Monitors, troubleshoots, and resolves alarms on the building automation system. Repairs faulty sequencing, controllers, sensors, and other controls system devices.
  • Completes hardware, wiring configuration, trending, sequencing, and point alarming installations.
  • Maintains setpoints and operation of central systems within energy management and/or design operation parameters.
  • Creates and modifies Graphical User Interfaces for the Building Automation System.
  • Oversees work with controls contractors, guiding execution of routine maintenance and special controls projects.
  • Reads and interprets blueprints and technical literature.
  • Programs and/or troubleshoots various brands of HVAC controls products.
  • Performs related work as assigned.

Minimum Requirements

MINIMUM EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in electronics, mechanical systems, computer technology, air conditioning or similar field.
  • Five (5) years of HVAC controls systems (DDS/BAS), with journeyman license or equivalent combination of education, training, certifications, and experience.

Other Minimum Requirements

  • Certifications in Metasys® System Extended Architecture (AX) and Facility Explorer® (FX) Field Controller & Networking or obtained within one(1) year of employment.
  • Experience with BAS communication protocols including at least one of the following: BACnet MSTP, BACnet IP, N2, P1, Modbus, and/or LON.
  • Experience with User Interface and Commissioning using SMP, SCT, and/or CCT.
  • Must possess and maintain a valid state driver’s license with an acceptable driving history.
  • Must submit to fingerprinting for criminal history check.
  • Must complete the annual security awareness training.
  • Must wear safety equipment as mandated by OSHA.

Physical Demands

Physical demands refer to the requirements for physical exertion and coordination of limb and body

movement.

  • Performs light to medium work that involves climbing ladders, walking, stooping, lifting, stretching, or standing virtually all the time and also involves exerting between 20- and 50-pounds force on a regular and recurring basis or considerable skill, adeptness, and speed in the use of fingers, hands, or limbs in tasks involving close tolerances or limits of accuracy.

Unavoidable hazards refer to the job conditions that may lead to injury or health hazards even though precautions have been taken.

  • Bright/dim light; Dusts and pollen.

  • Vibration; Fumes and/or noxious odors.
