Assistant Director of Marketing and Communications

Reporting to the Sr. Associate Director of Finance and Administration, the Assistant Director of Marketing and Communications oversees marketing, public relations, social media, web presence, all print and video content for UREC. This position ensures the department's communication and marketing strategy is in alignment with divisional and institutional parameters. The position directly supervises 1 FT staff member and indirectly supervises a team of 5 students.


Job Responsibilities:

50% Leadership & Management

Directly supervises the Communications Specialist and assigned student employees by setting priorities and managing the day-to-day workflow of UREC Marketing and Communications. Provides training, coaching, ongoing feedback, and performance evaluation, and supports the continued professional development of supervised staff. Assists in hiring and onboarding student employees, and recommends personnel actions for the supervisory area to leadership. Leads regular team meetings and contributes to a positive work environment by developing and maintaining relationships that support a culture of teamwork and cooperation. Demonstrates and models divisional attitudes and priorities in all aspects of work. Serves as a liaison to the LSU Division of Marketing and Communications. Oversees the marketing and communications budget within parameters established by leadership and monitors expenditures against the approved budget. Maintains inventory of equipment related to communication and marketing efforts and coordinates day-to-day vendor relationships supporting these functions.


45% Quality Control

Produces, coordinates, and manages marketing and communications outputs for University Recreation, both internal and external, delivered through print, website, email, digital signage, and social media, ensuring all materials exude a high degree of quality and consistency. Applies and maintains LSU and UREC brand standards across all mediums. Works collaboratively with the Office of Communication and University Relations and adheres to the standards set therein. Handles editing and content development across multiple mediums, including an effective and user-friendly departmental website and departmental broadcast email. Directs and reviews the graphic design and creative production carried out by the Communications Specialist to ensure quality and brand consistency. Maintains the annual communications calendar. Gathers and applies feedback regarding departmental programs and experiences to support continuous improvement of communications each academic year. Coordinates the biennial user satisfaction survey and incorporates assessment findings into communication strategies and recommendations.


5% Other Duties as Assigned

Other duties as assigned by UREC leadership or Sr. Associate Director. This includes but not limited to efforts that support broad division and institution efforts including at least 40 hours per year spent helping divisional initiatives such as Move-In Day, Welcome Week, Family Weekend, Career Expo, Disability Services Finals Testing, other special projects, etc.


Minimum Qualifications:

Bachelor's degree in Marketing, Communications, Public Relations, Journalism, Graphic Design, Digital Media, or a related field with 3 years of professional experience in marketing, communications, public relations, digital media, or a closely related field.

Preferred Qualifications:

Master's degree in Marketing, Communications, Public Relations, Journalism, Digital Media, or related field with 5 years of professional experience with social media analytics, email marketing platforms and web content management systems in higher education.


Additional Information:

Due to the nature of the position and/or responsibilities, in times of emergencies and/or University closures, this position is considered essential. It may be required to assist the Office of Communications and University Relations on Necessary Communications Matters in times of crisis, including potentially working in LSU's Emergency Operations Center during those times.

This position has access to/directly handles cash. Financial history/credit check required per FASOP HR-04.
