About This Position

Maintains and troubleshoot various traffic signals and systems which includes, but not limited to, modems, controller monitors, relay switches, conflict monitors, interconnect wiring, railroad and pedestrian pre-emption systems. Troubleshoot and correct problems associated with programming and functional defects, upgrade devices, (video detection, controllers, wiring and Ethernet connections); program and/or re-program signal controllers. Performs duties in adverse traffic conditions and in all types of weather. Required to operate a 35’ boom truck.

Job Duties

Job Duties and Other Information

  • Maintains and repairs all computerized traffic control systems in the district— including signals, beacons, radar signs, controllers, detectors, and related electrical components—using specialized testing equipment and operating a 35’ bucket truck to ensure proper traffic control.
  • Inspects and programs traffic signal equipment; assists with installing and upgrading signal systems; documents inventory and timing changes; completes daily reporting, data entry, and vehicle logs to support accurate operations and recordkeeping.
  • Maintains safe traffic flow around work zones, coordinates with law enforcement for traffic control, responds to emergency signal issues across the district, and adjusts detection systems and downloads TSI data to ensure continuous and accurate signal operation.
  • Assembles, tests, maintains, and inventories signal equipment; performs routine maintenance and assigned duties; operates a forklift for shipments; submits depositions and appears in court for the State; and installs or replaces detection pods for field operations.

Position-Specific Details

Appointment Type: Probational

Career Progression: This position may be filled as a Trade Apprentice, Electronic Technician Trainee or Electronic Technician.

Work Schedule: Work hours are 6:00 AM to 4:30 PM, Monday - Thursday.

Compensation: Below is the starting hourly rate for each level:

  • Trade Apprentice: $16.06
  • Electronic Technician Trainee: $21.05/hr
  • Electronic Technician: $24.10/hr
  • A Class B CDL license is required before appointment
  • Drug test is required
  • Applicants who possess working knowledge of computers are encouraged to apply.
  • 24 call-outs for emergencies that occur outside of normal work hours.
  • Lifting: a maximum of 50 pounds will be required, due to servicing equipment and lifting of signal heads.
