About This Job
This position is located in the DOTD District 04 Traffic Operations Section. The General duties of this position are to perform the basic sign installation, replacement and maintenance on all State and Federal Highways, in accordance with the Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices and La. DOTD's Traffic Engineering Manual when necessary. This position serves as a District Sign Specialist 1 or District Sign Specialist 2. The incumbent will be put on an afterhours worksheet in case of emergencies, perform their duties in all types of weather, possess a Class "D" Chauffeurs License, be able to lift up to 50 pounds, perform minor maintenance on their work truck and use the hydraulic and engine driven post drivers. The incumbent is required to assist in setting up and closing roads for bridge repairs, interstates for snow and ice events, other emergencies that may arise and assist other sign crews with larger and more complex jobs. This position requires the incumbent to make minor repairs and perform necessary maintenance on equipment and vehicles used to perform this task. The incumbent is required to operate computers, pda's and other electronic devices in order to create and maintain daily work orders.

- Performs all sign installation, replacement, and maintenance on all State and Federal Highways in accordance with the Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD). This includes highway signing, construction signing, road closures, barricades, warning, and other permanent and temporary signing. Helps determine the exact placement of signs based on field conditions for speed zones, weight limits, and other regulatory signing by interpreting legal orders (signed by the Chief Engineer), establishing these regulations. Maintains daily work orders (including GPS readings of sign locations), material usage reports, tracking truck inventory, using PDA's and other electronic devices, installing barricades as needed for traffic control assignments, cleaning signs and performing discriminative tree and limb cutting to clear obscured signs in order to provide required sign distances.
- Obtain training which is listed in PPM# 59 for this position, and any additional training as required by the Section Head or Highway Foreman
- Perform miscellaneous duties as necessary to ensure the smooth and efficient operation of the crew. This may consist of entering PDA and / or GPS data into database.
- Special Duty: May be required to perform other duties as necessary including, but not limited to, emergency / disaster support activities.
