The Office of the Commissioner of the Revenue is seeking qualified applicants for the position of Business Tax Assessor. The successful candidate will perform complex professional work, independently assessing business license, business tangible personal property, and local excise taxes. The successful candidate will be expected to provide excellent customer service while operating in a challenging and fast-paced work environment; utilize state tax code, case law and local ordinances to ensure that businesses are assessed fairly, equitably and uniformly; analyze business operations, tax returns, and other business records to ensure proper classification and assessment for business license, business tangible personal property, excise and other local taxes; participate in professional training to remain informed of federal, state, and local tax laws; interact professionally with business owners, CPAs, attorneys, and other tax professionals to ensure local tax compliance and defend assessments as well as with office management, Treasurer's and County Attorney's office personnel as collection, bankruptcy, appeal and litigation issues dictate.
Must have exceptional writing, analytical, and communication skills, and familiarity with business structures and business income taxes (both Federal and Virginia). Must be able to meet deadlines, problem solve and multitask. Must have knowledge of automated systems along with direct customer service experience. Must be flexible as work priorities change, independently exercise good professional judgment, and maintain confidentiality of tax information. Participates in professional training to remain informed of federal, state, and local tax laws. Provides court testimony, as necessary.
Hiring salary commensurate with experience.
Requires any combination of education and experience equivalent to an associate degree in Business, Management Finance or related field; and three (3) years of related work experience with automated systems and customer service preferably in taxation or finance. Knowledge of business structures, state and federal taxes, business procedures and accounting practices is desirable. Qualified applicants must have strong oral and written communications skills to interact with businesses and tax representatives.
Must maintain a valid driver's license in Virginia or regional state of residence. Must be familiar with Microsoft Office applications. Must have the ability to tour commercial facilities of all types.
