The Criminal Branch is responsible for the prosecution of misdemeanor cases filed throughout the City of Los Angeles.   

The Supervising Attorney is responsible for all aspects of the administration and operations necessary to prosecute misdemeanors in court, including training, management, and supervision of all attorneys and support staff. Duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to:


  • Organizing and directing (along with the Assistant Supervisor, if also assigned) the daily operations of attorneys and support staff, including making staffing assignments, approval of timesheets, case assignments and rotational assignments of attorneys and support staff;
  • Participating in the daily oversight, supervision, training and mentoring of attorneys, including court observation and providing feedback, assisting attorneys in carrying out their assignments, conducting formal and informal training, reviewing trial results, trial transcripts and dispositions, and discussing trial strategies and appropriate dispositions;
  • Participating in personnel matters for both attorneys and support staff, including disciplinary matters, evaluations, and performance reviews;
  • Coordinating with the Support Staff Supervisor in overseeing support staff operations to assure timely processing of cases and ensure efficient operations, including developing and facilitating improvements to the existing systems;
  • Responding to inquiries from judges, commissioners, court personnel, attorneys, other agencies or departments, law enforcement agencies and members of the public;
  • Representing the Office at meetings with criminal justice personnel and members of the public;
  • Working closely with other sections of the Office to facilitate effective and efficient administration of justice, including the integration of the Office's restorative justice programs;
  • Working closely with law enforcement, office staff and courthouse management to ensure the efficient processing of complaints and court files;
  • Preparing reports, statistics, surveys, and budgetary recommendations, including addressing requests and referrals from the Executive Office and Branch Management;
  • Advising the Criminal Branch Division of all significant activities, cases or events;
  • Implementing new and existing innovative programs and procedures to achieve recidivism reduction, increased productivity, quality control, and cost savings;
  • Prosecuting cases in court as needed, including jury trial;
  • Other duties as assigned.

Applicants for this position must have a license to practice law in all of the courts in the State of California. Additional requirements include:

  • At least ten (10) years of legal experience, which includes five (5) years of extensive trial experience with demonstrated excellent trial skills;
  • Supervisory experience in the office, including assignment as a supervisor, assistant supervisor, director or coordinator of a division, branch, unit, section or program with the responsibility for overseeing and evaluating the performance of deputy city attorneys;
  • Broad knowledge of criminal law and procedure;
  • Thorough understanding of trial strategy, case and trial preparation and evidentiary issues;
  • Thorough understanding of current legal trends and issues effecting substantive criminal law and procedure;
  • Demonstrated ability in case evaluation and crime charging, including proficiency in criminal pleadings, search and seizure law and application of office crime chagrining and disposition standards and guidelines;
  • Familiarity with filing, arraignment, calendar and trial court operations and procedures;
  • Excellent communication skills, both oral and written;
  • Ability to represent the Office in meetings with community stakeholders, the judiciary and law enforcement; and,
  • Ability to prepare reports, memoranda, budget requests and analysis of statistical data and trends.

Desirable Qualifications

  • Experience in resolving and advising on complex and/or sensitive matters.
  • Ability to deal effectively with public officials, departmental executive management and personnel, and members of the public.
  • Strong organizational and problem-solving skills, the ability to prioritize, and concurrently complete multiple assignments.

Current Location

The primary location for this Supervisor position is the Airport court office, is located at 11701 S. La Cienega Blvd, Los Angeles, CA 90045.  This position may also be required to work at the Long Beach court office located at 100 Oceangate, Long Beach, CA 90802, and is subject to assignment at any location of the Office of the Los Angeles City Attorney.
