What are the responsibilities and job description for the Deputy City Attorney II/III position at Los Angeles City Attorney's Office (CA)?
The Police Discovery Section of the Public Safety General Counsel Division represents the Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) on discovery matters ranging from Pitchess motions to subpoenas. Section Attorneys handle discovery matters in criminal, civil and administrative proceedings, which may also include appellate proceedings.
The selected attorney will be responsible for:
- Drafting discovery motions and protective orders;
- Appearing on discovery motions in various state, federal and administrative proceedings throughout
- Los Angeles County and occasionally in other counties in the State of California;
- Negotiating and resolving discovery disputes;
- Advising LAPD on discovery matters; and
- Other related duties as assigned.
Applicants for this position must have a license to practice law in all of the courts in the State of California. Additional requirements include:
- Five or more years of civil or criminal litigation experience;
- Demonstrated high level of skill in legal research, writing and analysis;
- Excellent oral advocacy skills;
- Excellent negotiation skills; and
- The selected candidate must join the bar for the United States District Court for the Central District of California and must be willing to join the bar of all other United States District Courts in the State of California and the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals.
Desirable Qualifications
Law and motion experience in both state and federal courts; the ability to prioritize and complete multiple assignments with multiple deadlines; and experience in dealing with government agencies.

Current Location
City Hall East, 200 N. Main Street, Los Angeles. Position is subject to assignment at any location of the Office of the Los Angeles City Attorney.
Probation
Appointment to this exempt position (non-Civil Service) will be subject to a two year probationary period as required by Section 1050 of the City Charter. Successfully completing this probationary period will result in tenure with the office.
Classification
Internal applicants: Placement in this position will be as a lateral transfer with the selected candidate assuming the position in their current classification.
