What You Will Do

This position will be filled at either the Engineered Systems Tec 2 or 3 level, depending on the skills of the selected candidate. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if the candidate is hired at the higher level.

The Dynamic Structure Design, Engineering, and Vessel Operations Group, J-2, is seeking a talented welder to join its Vessel Operations Team. Welding operations support the refurbishment of J-Division's confinement vessel systems that are used throughout the DOE Complex in supporting the execution of hydrodynamic tests. In this role, the selected candidate will become qualified for weld repair of HSLA-100 confinement vessels. This will include requirements to gain inspection experience and CWI certifications to support the team's overall efforts as well as our production vessel team with site visits to our fabrication vendors. Candidates will be required to be qualified crane and forklift operators as well as radiological and beryllium workers.

What You Need

Minimum Job Requirements:

Engineered Systems Tec 2 ($54,900-$84,300)

  • Welding and Gouging Experience: Basic experience in SMAW, GTAW, and/or GMAW
  • Some experience working with mechanical assemblies and fabrication processes, to include understanding in reading and working to shop drawings
  • Basic understanding in standard shop equipment and tools to include knowledge of proper tool usage, operational hazards, and ability to follow operational procedures
  • Knowledge and experience with installation, testing, repair, and maintenance of equipment or systems
  • Ability to read and understand written or verbal instructions, drawings, layouts, and other related specifications
  • Ability to obtain a DOE Q Clearance

Engineered Systems Tec 3 ($66,100-$103,600)

In addition to the requirements of the Engineered Systems Tec Level 2 outlined above, qualification at the higher level requires:

  • Welding and Gouging Experience: Demonstrated experience in SMAW, GTAW, and/or GMAW
  • Demonstrated experience working with mechanical assemblies and fabrication processes to include proficient in reading and working to shop drawings
  • Demonstrated proficiency in standard shop equipment and tools to include knowledge of proper tool usage, operational hazards, and ability to distill operation procedures
  • Demonstrated interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills and ability to interact with all levels of personnel and customers
  • Must have the ability to work independently and as well as collaboratively as part of a team

Education/Experience at lower level: Position requires a high school diploma and a minimum of three years of related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Education/Experience at higher level: Position require an Associates' Degree in a related field and a minimum of 3 years of related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Experience in NDE methods such as mag particle, liquid penetrants, and visual inspections
  • Welding certifications or previous certifications in SMAW, GTAW, and GMAW
  • Experience working in hazardous operations such as radiological contamination areas, confined spaces, and usage of PPE (personal protective equipment)
  • Heavy Equipment experience such as forklift usage, overhead cranes

Work Location: The work location for this position is onsite and located in Los Alamos, NM. All work locations are at the discretion of management.

Position commitment: Regular appointment employees are required to serve a period of continuous service in their current position in order to be eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory. If an employee has not served the time required, they may only apply for Laboratory jobs with the documented approval of their Division Leader. The position commitment for this position is 1 year.

Additional Details

Directive 206.2 - Employment with Triad requires a favorable decision by NNSA indicating employee is suitable under NNSA Supplemental Directive 206.2. Please note that this requirement applies only to citizens of the United States. Foreign nationals are subject to a similar requirement under DOE Order 142.3A.

Clearance: Q (Position will be cleared to this level). Selected applicants will be subject to a background investigation conducted by or on behalf of the Federal Government, and must meet eligibility requirements* for access to classified matter. This position requires a Q clearance, and obtaining such clearance requires US Citizenship except in extremely rare circumstances. Dependent upon the position, additional authorization to access classified information may be required, which may or may not be available to dual citizens. Receipt of a Q clearance and additional access authorization ultimately is a decision of the Federal Government and not of Triad.

  • Eligibility requirements: To obtain a clearance, an individual must be at least 18 years of age; U.S. citizenship is required except in very limited circumstances. See DOE Order 472.2 for additional information.

New-Employment Drug Test: The Laboratory requires successful applicants to complete a new-employment drug test and maintains a substance abuse policy that includes random drug testing. Although New Mexico and other states have legalized the use of marijuana, use and possession of marijuana remain illegal under federal law. A positive drug test for marijuana will result in termination of employment, even if the use was pre-offer.

Regular position: Term status Laboratory employees applying for regular-status positions are converted to regular status.
