What You Will Do

Do you enjoy working outdoors and have an interest in helping to protect the rich cultural heritage of northern New Mexico? The Environmental Stewardship Group at Los Alamos National Laboratory is seeking an Environmental Technician to help manage and protect cultural resources and enable mission work across the Laboratory.

The Environmental Tec will engage in a combination of fieldwork and office work and will be trained to conduct specific tasks in support of cultural resources protection and compliance. Cultural resources at the Laboratory include approximately 2,000 archaeological sites and several hundred historical facilities on Laboratory property that span 10,000 years of human activity on the Pajarito Plateau. The Environmental Technician will join the team of cultural resources specialists who ensure compliance with federal and state cultural resources laws and regulations. Specific tasks will include:

  • Assisting with field surveys and in-field documentation of archaeological sites, including note taking, measuring, and photography.
  • Placing and removing string and flagging tape around cultural resources.
  • Working with projects to ensure that they avoid cultural resources, including monitoring during project activities.
  • Assisting with the documentation of historical facilities, including note taking and photography.
  • Database entry.

What You Need

Minimum Job Requirements:

  • Basic aptitude to develop experience and technical knowledge in environmental compliance and the ability to implement those principles.
  • General skills including note taking and illustration.
  • Good communication skills and the ability to work well on a team.
  • Ability to utilize personal protection equipment (PPE), such as protective footwear, safety glasses, safety vests, etc.
  • Physically able to work in demanding environments, including the ability to utilize ladders and stairs, carry instruments and supplies weighing up to 35 pounds, and work outdoors in cold or hot weather.
  • General knowledge and experience with environmental measures and associated requirements.
  • General experience and technical knowledge in environmental compliance and the ability to implement those principles.
  • Ability to obtain a DOE Q clearance.

Education/Experience: Position requires a High School Diploma or equivalent and 1-2 years of related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Familiarity with the cultures and cultural resources of the Southwest, especially northern New Mexico.
  • Experience using Global Positioning System (GPS) units or equivalent smart phone applications to orient yourself and record locations in the field.
  • Knowledge or experience working with indigenous peoples.

Work Location: The work location for this position is onsite and located in Los Alamos, NM. All work locations are at the discretion of management.

Work Environment: Demonstrated commitment to working safely in outdoor environments with variable weather and terrain and an office environment.

Work Schedule: This position may require 24/7 coverage, which could involve working a shift/weekend schedule. Employees maybe eligible for shift differential pay when assigned by their manager. Shift/weekend assignments are at the discretion of the manager.

Position Commitment: Regular appointment employees are required to serve a period of continuous service in their current position in order to be eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory. If an employee has not served the time required, they may only apply for Laboratory jobs with the documented approval of their Division Leader. The position commitment for this position is 1 year.

Additional Details

Directive 206.2 - Employment with Triad requires a favorable decision by NNSA indicating employee is suitable under NNSA Supplemental Directive 206.2. Please note that this requirement applies only to citizens of the United States. Foreign nationals are subject to a similar requirement under DOE Order 142.3A.

Clearance: Q (Position will be cleared to this level). Selected applicants will be subject to a background investigation conducted by or on behalf of the Federal Government, and must meet eligibility requirements* for access to classified matter. This position requires a Q clearance. and obtaining such clearance requires US Citizenship except in extremely rare circumstances. Dependent upon the position, additional authorization to access classified information may be required, which may or may not be available to dual citizens. Receipt of a Q clearance and additional access authorization ultimately is a decision of the Federal Government and not of Triad.

  • Eligibility requirements: To obtain a clearance, an individual must be at least 18 years of age; U.S. citizenship is required except in very limited circumstances. See DOE Order 472.2 for additional information.

New-Employment Drug Test: The Laboratory requires successful applicants to complete a new-employment drug test and maintains a substance abuse policy that includes random drug testing. Although New Mexico and other states have legalized the use of marijuana, use and possession of marijuana remain illegal under federal law. A positive drug test for marijuana will result in termination of employment, even if the use was pre-offer.

Regular position: Term status Laboratory employees applying for regular-status positions are converted to regular status.
