About the Opportunity

Our client is seeking a hands-on, forward-thinking Director of Finance & Accounting to help build and scale the finance function of a rapidly growing Birmingham-based organization. The company has expanded significantly in recent years, growing to more than 60 employees and seven distinct business lines, with plans to continue growing through strategic partnerships, mergers, and acquisitions.

This is not a traditional accounting leadership role focused solely on closing the books. The Director of Finance & Accounting will oversee core accounting operations while improving financial systems, reporting, processes, and data flow across the organization. This individual will also support the company’s transition from QuickBooks Online to Sage Intacct and identify opportunities to use technology, AI, and automation more effectively within the finance function.

What You’ll Do

• Oversee day-to-day accounting operations, including reconciliations, journal entries, financial reporting, and month-end close.
• Manage and develop the Accounting Assistant while providing leadership across the accounting function.
• Lead the transition of accounting responsibilities from the organization’s current contract CPA/bookkeeper.
• Support the implementation of Sage Intacct and the continued development of the company’s financial systems.
• Improve accounting processes, internal controls, workflows, and financial data architecture.
• Develop scalable reporting across seven distinct business lines.
• Analyze financial results and provide meaningful insights and recommendations to executive leadership.
• Support M&A diligence, financial modeling, and post-acquisition integration.
• Identify opportunities to automate transactional accounting and eliminate operational bottlenecks.
• Establish procedures and controls for AI-supported financial workflows.
• Partner closely with leadership on strategic initiatives and continued organizational growth.

What We’re Looking For

• Progressive accounting experience with strong Controller, Assistant Controller, or Director-level capabilities.
• Hands-on experience with month-end close, reconciliations, financial reporting, and financial analysis.
• Ability to interpret financial results and clearly communicate insights to executive leadership.
• Experience improving accounting processes and building scalable workflows.
• Strong systems aptitude and an interest in using technology, AI, and automation to improve financial operations.
• Adaptable, teachable, and comfortable working in a rapidly changing environment.
• Self-starter who can take ownership, identify needs, and move initiatives forward.
• Ability to work fully onsite in Birmingham.
