The Member Loan Officer is responsible for delivering exceptional member service by building strong relationships, identifying members' financial needs, and providing consumer lending solutions that support their financial goals. This position originates, processes, underwrites within authorized lending authority, and closes consumer loans while ensuring compliance with applicable laws, regulations, Credit Union policies, and sound risk management practices.

The Member Loan Officer is responsible for maintaining a strong understanding of lending risk, identifying potential fraud indicators, completing appropriate due diligence, and ensuring loan decisions are made in accordance with established underwriting guidelines and internal controls. This position supports the Credit Union’s Bank Secrecy Act (BSA), Anti-Money Laundering (AML), and fraud prevention efforts by accurately identifying, documenting, and reporting suspicious or unusual activity in accordance with Credit Union procedures.

This position also opens and services deposit accounts, educates members on Credit Union products and services, and serves as a trusted financial resource. The Member Loan Officer contributes to the Credit Union’s continued growth by promoting financial wellness, maintaining operational excellence, managing risk responsibly, delivering an exceptional member experience, and preserving the Credit Union’s long-standing reputation for service excellence.

The Member Loan Officer is expected to demonstrate professionalism, integrity, accountability, regulatory awareness, and a commitment to continuous learning while supporting the Credit Union’s mission, vision, values, strategic objectives, and culture of compliance.

Essential Job Functions and Responsibilities

The essential functions of this position include, but are not limited to:

Member Service and Relationship Development

  • Deliver exceptional member service by greeting members professionally, creating positive member experiences, and building trusted relationships.
  • Identify members’ financial needs and recommend appropriate Credit Union products and services that support their financial goals.
  • Resolve member concerns, answer questions, and research account discrepancies in a timely and professional manner.
  • Provide financial education and guidance to assist members in making informed financial decisions.
  • Maintain confidentiality of all member and Credit Union information in accordance with applicable laws, regulations, and Credit Union policies.
  • Represent the Credit Union professionally and positively during all member interactions and community activities.

Consumer Lending

  • Interview members to identify borrowing needs and recommend appropriate consumer lending solutions.
  • Receive, process, underwrite within authorized lending authority, and close consumer loan applications in accordance with Credit Union policies, lending guidelines, regulatory requirements, and sound risk management practices.
  • Collect, verify, and analyze required documentation, including credit reports, income verification, collateral information, debt obligations, and other financial information necessary to make informed lending decisions.
  • Explain loan products, interest rates, payment options, loan terms, disclosures, and lending requirements clearly and accurately to members.
  • Prepare and complete loan documentation accurately and timely.
  • Monitor approved loan conditions and ensure required documentation is obtained prior to loan funding.
  • Maintain loan quality standards while achieving established lending, service, and organizational goals.
  • Identify potential lending risks, documentation concerns, inconsistencies, or suspected fraud indicators and escalate concerns according to Credit Union procedures.

Deposit Accounts and Member Services

  • Open, maintain, and service checking and savings, accounts.
  • Assist members with debit cards, credit cards, online banking, mobile banking, direct deposit, electronic services, and other Credit Union products.
  • Process member transactions accurately while maintaining excellent member service.
  • Educate members on available products and services that enhance convenience, security, and financial well-being.
  • Follow established account opening procedures, member identification requirements, and documentation standards.

Compliance, BSA, Risk Management, and Operational Responsibilities

  • Ensure compliance with all Credit Union policies, procedures, internal controls, and applicable federal and state laws and regulations.
  • Follow Bank Secrecy Act (BSA), Anti-Money Laundering (AML), Customer Identification Program (CIP), Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC), fraud prevention, and identity theft procedures.
  • Complete appropriate due diligence when opening accounts, processing transactions, and originating loans to ensure accuracy, compliance, and protection of Credit Union assets.
  • Recognize and report suspicious activity, unusual transactions, potential fraud, identity theft concerns, or other compliance risks in accordance with established procedures.
  • Maintain awareness of financial crimes, lending fraud trends, and operational risks that may impact the Credit Union and its members.
  • Protect confidential member information in accordance with the Gramm-Leach-Bliley Act (GLBA), privacy requirements, and Credit Union policies.
  • Maintain complete, accurate, and organized lending and member documentation.
  • Complete reports, records, and required documentation accurately and within established timeframes.
  • Participate in internal audits, regulatory examinations, and risk management activities as assigned.
  • Maintain current knowledge of lending regulations, compliance requirements, Credit Union policies, and industry best practices.

Sales, Business Development, and Credit Union Growth

  • Build consultative relationships by identifying opportunities to deepen member relationships.
  • Recommend consumer loans, deposit products, electronic services, and other Credit Union products based on member needs.
  • Promote financial wellness by providing solutions that align with members’ financial goals.
  • Participate in business development, community outreach, and Credit Union initiatives that support membership growth.
  • Assist in achieving individual, branch, and organizational performance goals.

Teamwork, Training, and Professional Development

  • Foster a positive, collaborative work environment by supporting coworkers and assisting with branch operations as needed.
  • Assist with onboarding, training, and mentoring of new employees when assigned.
  • Successfully complete all required compliance training, professional development training, and continuing education requirements within established deadlines.
  • Complete required training related to BSA/AML, OFAC, fraud prevention, cybersecurity awareness, consumer lending regulations, fair lending practices, privacy protection, workplace safety, and Credit Union policies.
  • Participate in ongoing lending, operational, regulatory, and leadership development opportunities to maintain knowledge and enhance job performance.
  • Demonstrate accountability for applying training knowledge and regulatory requirements to daily responsibilities.
  • Perform additional duties and special projects as assigned to support departmental and organizational objectives.
  • Support and model the Credit Union’s mission, vision, values, and commitment to the philosophy of People Helping People.
  • May need to assist with Member Service Representative duties, when needed.
  • Other Duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSA’s)

The Member Loan Officer must possess the following knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to successfully perform the essential functions of the position:

Knowledge

  • Thorough knowledge of consumer lending principles, loan origination processes, underwriting practices, credit analysis, loan documentation, and lending risk management.
  • Knowledge of Credit Union products and services, including consumer loans, deposit accounts, electronic services, and member financial solutions.
  • Knowledge of applicable federal and state laws, regulations, and compliance requirements governing financial institutions, including consumer lending regulations, fair lending requirements, privacy regulations, and recordkeeping requirements.
  • Knowledge of Bank Secrecy Act (BSA), Anti-Money Laundering (AML), Customer Identification Program (CIP), Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC), fraud prevention, and identity theft prevention requirements.
  • Knowledge of financial statement analysis, credit reports, income verification, debt obligations, collateral evaluation, and factors used in consumer lending decisions.
  • Knowledge of Credit Union policies, procedures, internal controls, operational processes, and risk management practices.
  • Knowledge of professional member service standards and relationship-based sales techniques.
  • Knowledge of computer systems, loan origination platforms, core processing systems, and Microsoft Office applications used in financial institution operations.

Education and Experience

A high school diploma or GED is required. An associate degree in Business, Finance, Accounting, or a related field is preferred. The ideal candidate will have three (3) to five (5) years of progressively responsible experience in consumer lending, member service, financial institution operations, or a related financial services environment.

Experience originating, processing, underwriting, and closing consumer loans is preferred, along with demonstrated knowledge of lending practices, credit analysis, loan documentation, and regulatory requirements. Experience with Bank Secrecy Act (BSA), Anti-Money Laundering (AML), fraud prevention, member identification procedures, and financial institution compliance practices is preferred. Candidates should demonstrate the ability to analyze financial information, exercise sound judgment, manage risk appropriately, maintain confidentiality, and provide exceptional member service. An equivalent combination of education, training, professional development, and relevant experience may be considered.

Physical Requirements

The physical requirements described below are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this position. The Member Loan Officer must be able to remain in a stationary position, including sitting or standing, for extended periods while assisting members, analyzing financial documents, processing transactions, and performing computer-based work. The position requires frequent movement throughout the branch to interact with members, access files and records, retrieve documents, attend meetings, and support daily branch operations.

The employee must frequently use hands and fingers to operate computers, calculators, telephones, printers, scanners, copiers, and other standard office equipment. The ability to communicate effectively and professionally in person, by telephone, and through electronic communication is essential for interacting with members, coworkers, vendors, auditors, examiners, and other business partners.

The position requires the ability to read, analyze, and prepare financial documents, loan applications, credit reports, disclosures, account documentation, regulatory forms, and other business records in both printed and electronic formats. Strong visual acuity, attention to detail, and the ability to accurately interpret financial information are required to ensure compliance with lending standards, internal controls, and applicable regulations.

The employee must be able to frequently reach, bend, stoop, kneel, and lift or carry files, office supplies, coin, or boxed records weighing up to 25 pounds, with occasional lifting of up to 40 pounds when assisting with branch operations or moving office materials. Manual dexterity is required to accurately process transactions, handle loan documentation, perform repetitive keyboarding duties, and operate standard office equipment.

The position requires the ability to maintain concentration, exercise sound judgment, and demonstrate attention to detail while managing multiple priorities, frequent interruptions, confidential information, and time-sensitive responsibilities in a fast-paced financial institution environment. The employee may be required to travel occasionally between branch locations, attend meetings, participate in professional development programs, support community events, or attend other Credit Union functions. Occasional evening or weekend work may be required to support operational needs, training requirements, business objectives, or member service initiatives.

Work Environment

Work is performed primarily in a professional financial institution environment with frequent interaction with members, employees, vendors, auditors, examiners, and visitors. The Member Loan Officer works in a fast-paced, service-oriented environment that requires professionalism, confidentiality, accuracy, strong attention to detail, and the ability to manage competing priorities while maintaining a positive member experience.

The position requires regular exposure to confidential financial information, loan documentation, and member account records. Employees must consistently follow established security procedures, compliance requirements, internal controls, and risk management practices to protect member information and safeguard Credit Union assets.

The employee is expected to maintain a professional appearance and demeanor while contributing to a safe, respectful, collaborative, and inclusive workplace. The Member Loan Officer must demonstrate adaptability, teamwork, accountability, and a commitment to continuous improvement while supporting the Credit Union’s mission, vision, values, strategic objectives, and philosophy of People Helping People.
