Director of Software Engineering

Compensation: Up to $215,000 Base Salary

Location: Scranton, PA Area | Primarily Remote

Onsite Requirement: Approximately Once Per Month

Employment Type: Full-Time, Direct Hire

What We're Looking For

The ideal candidate is an established software engineering leader who has successfully managed a large development organization rather than a small collection of individual teams.

We need someone who understands how to lead through engineering managers and technical leads, coordinate 10 teams, manage competing priorities, and drive consistent software delivery across an organization of 60–80 professionals.

Candidates should have progressed through software engineering into senior leadership, maintaining a strong understanding of modern Microsoft technologies while developing expertise in organizational management, engineering operations, and large-scale software delivery.

Experience managing this level of engineering headcount and team structure is a critical requirement.

Compensation & Work Arrangement

  • Base Salary: Up to $215,000
  • Location: Scranton, Pennsylvania area
  • Remote Flexibility: Primarily remote
  • Onsite Expectations: Approximately once per month in the Scranton area
  • Employment Type: Full-time, direct hire

Position Overview

We are seeking an experienced Director of Software Engineering to provide strategic and operational leadership across a large, multi-team development organization responsible for building and supporting enterprise-level software applications.

This position will oversee 10 software development teams, each consisting of approximately 6–8 professionals, with responsibility for engineering execution, team performance, technical direction, and delivery across a complex, cloud-based application environment.

The organization operates within a modern Microsoft technology ecosystem, leveraging C#, .NET, Angular, and Azure to develop scalable, API-driven applications and services. The Director will work closely with engineering leadership, architecture, product management, and business stakeholders to ensure development initiatives align with organizational priorities.

This is a leadership-focused position requiring substantial experience managing software engineering organizations at scale. While a strong technical background is essential, the primary emphasis is on organizational oversight, managing engineering leaders, driving execution, and maintaining consistency across numerous development teams.

The position is primarily remote, with approximately one onsite visit per month to the Scranton, PA area.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide leadership and oversight across 10 Agile software development teams, representing approximately 60–80 engineering professionals.
  • Manage and develop engineering managers, team leads, and senior technical contributors, establishing clear accountability for team performance and delivery.
  • Coordinate multiple development workstreams, ensuring engineering priorities, resources, and timelines align with business and product objectives.
  • Oversee the development and ongoing modernization of enterprise applications built with C#, .NET, Angular, and Microsoft Azure.
  • Partner with software architects and technical leads on application architecture, system integrations, cloud infrastructure, and platform scalability.
  • Establish consistent engineering standards across teams, including code quality, development practices, testing, security, and release management.
  • Drive improvements to Agile delivery processes, resource planning, cross-team collaboration, and engineering productivity.
  • Provide oversight for enterprise software initiatives involving RESTful APIs, microservices, cloud-hosted applications, data integration, and distributed systems.
  • Collaborate with product owners, business analysts, QA leadership, and executive stakeholders to ensure successful delivery of software solutions.
  • Support hiring, workforce planning, succession planning, performance management, and career development across the engineering organization.
  • Identify delivery risks, technical bottlenecks, and organizational challenges while implementing solutions that improve efficiency, reliability, and scalability.

Technical Environment

The engineering organization supports a cloud-first, API-driven insurance technology platform encompassing customer-facing web applications, digital transactions, backend services, system integrations, and complex business processes.

The technology environment includes:

  • Backend Development: C#, .NET, .NET Core, ASP.NET Core, RESTful APIs, and enterprise service architecture.
  • Frontend Development: Angular, TypeScript, and modern single-page applications.
  • Cloud Infrastructure: Microsoft Azure, including cloud-hosted services, serverless computing, storage, messaging, and monitoring.
  • Application Architecture: Microservices, monolithic applications, distributed systems, dependency injection, and scalable service-oriented design.
  • Data & Integration: SQL databases, document databases, Entity Framework, LINQ, data processing, and enterprise integrations.
  • DevOps & Delivery: CI/CD pipelines, Infrastructure as Code (IaC), automated testing, and cloud deployment practices.
  • Engineering Practices: Agile/Scrum, code reviews, performance optimization, application security, system reliability, and software modernization.

The Director is expected to understand these technologies and architectural concepts sufficiently to guide engineering leadership, evaluate technical decisions, and ensure consistent development standards across teams. This is not a position centered on daily hands-on coding.

Required Qualifications

  • Significant experience in software engineering leadership, ideally at the Director, Senior Director, or comparable organizational management level.
  • Proven experience overseeing 10 or more software development teams simultaneously, with responsibility for approximately 60–80 engineers and technical professionals.
  • Demonstrated success managing engineering managers, software development leads, and multiple layers of technical leadership.
  • Strong background in enterprise software development using C#, .NET, Azure, and Angular.
  • Experience overseeing the development and delivery of large-scale, cloud-based applications, distributed systems, and API-driven platforms.
  • Solid understanding of enterprise architecture, microservices, REST APIs, modern application design, and cloud infrastructure.
  • Experience managing Agile engineering organizations with multiple concurrent projects, development teams, and product priorities.
  • Proven ability to establish engineering standards, improve development processes, and maintain accountability across a large technical organization.
  • Strong experience with organizational planning, resource allocation, team development, and performance management.
  • Excellent communication skills with the ability to collaborate effectively with executive leadership, product management, and technical stakeholders.
  • Ability to travel to the Scranton, PA area approximately once per month.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience supporting enterprise-level transactional platforms, ideally within insurance, financial services, or another complex business application environment.
  • Background overseeing both application modernization and new software development initiatives.
  • Experience with Azure cloud architecture, CI/CD automation, Infrastructure as Code, and enterprise application scalability.
  • Experience building and developing a management structure across multiple engineering teams.
  • Familiarity with high-volume digital applications, system integrations, and business-critical production environments.
