POSITION SUMMARY:
Responsible for the overall organization, administration, planning and management of the Department of Nursing, E.R., Swing Beds, Surgery, Recovery, Pharmacy, Infection Control, Employee Health, Staff Development, and Discharge Planning. Ensures compliance with patient care quality standards as it relates to the care provided to all age groups of patients ranging from neonate to geriatric. Represents the overall Nursing Department in hospital Administration. In the absence of the Chief Executive Officer, the Director of Nursing has the authority to make administrative decisions.
PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES & AUTHORITIES:
wPromotes and supports the organizations objectives, mission, vision and values.
wProvides leadership in the areas of personnel management, problem-solving, communication, nursing theory
and practice, delegation of authority, and fiscal planning and budgeting.
wDisplays commitment and loyalty to the hospital and the management team.
wParticipates and attends Board of Directors, Medical Staff and other various committee meetings as assigned
wMay be required to travel out of town for some meetings and conferences.
wParticipates with leaders from the Board of Directors, Administrative Staff, Medical Staff, and Clinical areas
in the hospitals decision-making structures and processes.
wOrganizes, directs and administers the Nursing/Patient Care Services on a 24/7 on call basis in order to
assure the level of care required by current medical and nursing standards are met and provided.
w Possesses ability to work under pressure and coordinate activities of the Nursing Department.
w Displays good judgment, reasoning, and independent action in making rapid and concise decisions in dealing
with abnormal, difficult situations involving staff, providers or patients in an effective professional manner.

continuity.

w Expected to work a minimum of 40 hours per week working irregular hours and after hours.
PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES & AUTHORITIES CONT.
wIs responsible for interviewing and hiring of qualified nursing personnel and completing appropriate
documentation for Human Resources in a timely manner.
wIs responsible for guiding, encouraging, counselling and terminating nursing personnel when necessary and
providing Human Resources with appropriate documentation in a timely manner.
wIs responsible for keeping detailed documentation regarding individual employee issues.
wIs responsible for holding regular nursing staff meetings preferably monthly but no less than quarterly.
wIs responsible for determining qualifications and competence of personnel who provide patient care services
overseeing the training and continuing education process, and evaluating performance.
wGives direction and delegates tasks and responsibilities to aid in motivating and developing subordinates for
the efficient utilization of nursing resources.
wMonitors and assists in maintaining a positive morale within the departments.
wPromotes, guides and encourages participative management of the Nursing Department with the assistance of
Nurse Managers.
w Is responsible for adequately staffing the department to maintain quality of patient care.
wSupervises and assists in the preparation of nursing schedules, covering shifts, and reviewing of bi weekly
payroll sheets.
wMay at times be required to work understaffed shifts within the nursing department when necessary.
wPlans and coordinates with the CFO for planning the budgeting requirements for personnel, supplies and
equipment.
wResponsible for cost controls to insure maximum effectiveness of the funds expended from the department
budget.
wPlans and recommends to Administration new equipment or modifications to provide quality patient care.
wConsults with the hospital Administrator concerning immediate and long-range planning to expand and
improve nursing service.
wParticipates in selection of sources for services not provided by the department or organization.
wIs responsible for implementing and maintaining an effective and on-going QA/QI program to measure and
improve quality of patient care.
wResponsible for assuring that adequate safety measures are in place to protect patients, visitors, and staff.
w Investigates and initiates follow-up on complaints made to nursing department, risk management, and safety
concerns and consults with the Risk Manager on these issues.

Other duties as assigned by the Chief Executive Officer and/or Board of Directors.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS (EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE, SKILLS, ABILITIES):
wGraduate of an accredited School of Nursing with current licensure in the state of Kentucky.
wBachelors Degree in Nursing.
wMust have at least five (5) years experience in management and in excess of five (5) years nursing experience
in a healthcare setting.
wMust be familiar with and have above average knowledge in all areas of nursing.
wMust have the ability to demonstrate strong leadership skills, have good organizational and managerial ability
and have good interpersonal relationship skills along with the application of sound administrative principles.
wExcellent problem solving abilities.
wAbility to work independently, exercise creativity, be attentive to detail and maintain a positive attitude.
