Job Summary
Linden Hall is seeking an enthusiastic and collaborative Library Media Specialist/Makerspace Coordinator who brings energy, creativity, and a deep interest in how girls learn. We welcome applicants who are personable, highly organized, and possess strong communication and technical skills for working with middle and upper school students.

The Library Media Specialist/Makerspace Coordinator will teach students about information literacy, digital citizenship, library systems, digital databases, and research skills. They will have expertise in current trends in young adult books, media, and research. They will nurture a love of creativity and cross-curricular innovation through the makerspace and support faculty and students in design thinking, digital tools, and project-based learning experiences. This individual should approach day-to-day technology questions with confidence and resourcefulness and demonstrate an understanding of the developmental needs of adolescent girls.

Qualifications:

  • A bachelor’s degree in library science, education, instructional technology, or a related field is required. A master’s degree is strongly preferred.
  • Prior experience working in a school library, media center, or makerspace environment; experience in independent schools preferred.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to positively engage middle and upper school students.
  • Demonstrated technical proficiency with digital tools, maker equipment, and emerging technologies.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with students, faculty, staff, and parents.
  • Experience and understanding of library database operations and management. Familiarity with systems such as Destiny, JSTOR, ProQuest, and Gale databases is preferred.
  • Experience or training in design thinking, STEM/STEAM, or hands-on maker education (3D printing, electronics, robotics, digital fabrication, etc.).
  • Ability to troubleshoot basic technology questions with creativity, clarity, and confidence.
  • An understanding of the developmental needs of adolescent girls and an enthusiasm for supporting their academic growth and independence.

Essential Duties

  • Create and maintain an inviting, dynamic school library and makerspace that supports research, reading, creativity, design, collaboration, and independent exploration for a diverse population of middle and upper school students.
  • Oversee the school’s print and digital collections, including circulation, shelving, displays, student follow-up, and management of digital research databases, while conducting annual review, weeding, and acquisition to maintain a relevant and accessible collection.
  • Provide instruction in information literacy, research strategies, digital citizenship, and media skills, presenting confidently to students and faculty on search techniques, source evaluation, citation, and ethical information use.
  • Collaborate with classroom teachers to integrate library resources and makerspace tools into curriculum units, supporting interdisciplinary projects, hands-on learning, and design-thinking experiences.
  • Support students individually, in small groups, and in whole-class settings as they engage in research, media creation, prototyping, and maker-centered projects.
  • Develop and lead makerspace programming that fosters creativity and innovation, including workshops, challenges, design-thinking activities, and curriculum-connected projects.
  • Train students and faculty in the safe and effective use of makerspace tools and technologies, including 3D printers, crafting materials, electronics, robotics, digital fabrication equipment, and creative software, while maintaining equipment and managing inventory and repairs.
  • Promote a culture of reading, curiosity, and creativity through engaging book displays, themed showcases, maker exhibits, and events that highlight student achievements in both the school library and makerspace, including coordinating interlibrary loans and community library partnerships.
  • Supervise and mentor student volunteers who assist with school library and makerspace operations, and coordinate schedules, shared resources, and technology support in collaboration with the technology department.
  • Ensure a safe, organized, and inclusive environment by supervising student use of spaces and tools, enforcing safety protocols, assisting with basic technological needs, and maintaining a clear and accessible on-campus schedule with faculty and academic leaders to continuously refine library and makerspace programming that aligns with school goals and enhances student learning across departments.

Additional Duties

  • Perform additional responsibilities that are a part of being an adult in a boarding community, as needed, including participating in Residential Life weekend duties, serving as a student advisor, acting as a class mentor, supervising a club, coaching a sport, and overseeing the yearbook program.
  • Maintain professional competence by attending staff development programs, curriculum development sessions, and relevant continuing education opportunities.
  • Create an effective and inspiring learning environment by developing functional and engaging media displays, bulletin boards, and interactive learning centers that highlight student creativity, promote exploration, and support ongoing curricular work.
  • Perform any other related duties as assigned by the Head of School or other appropriate administrator.

All offers of employment are contingent upon the successful completion of required background checks and clearances. All clearances must be obtained and approved prior to the start date.
