Job Overview
We are seeking a compassionate and dedicated Personal Attendant-Caregiver to provide exceptional support and care to individuals in various settings, including private homes, assisted living facilities, group homes, and community environments. This vital role involves assisting clients with daily activities, ensuring their safety, and promoting independence while delivering personalized care tailored to each individual's needs.

The Personal Attendant provides direct, individualized support to clients with intellectual/developmental disabilities and or mental health needs in their private residence and community. The primary focus of this position is client supervision, feeding, and dressing, while promoting safety, dignity, and independence in alignment with the client’s Individual Program Plan, Title 17, and Lighthouse Living Services policies.

This position qualifies as a Personal Attendant under Wage Order 15, which requires that at least 80 percent of work time be spent on client care related duties. Household and other non-care tasks are limited to no more than 20 percent of total weekly work time.

We are looking for individuals with experience supporting clients with severe developmental disabilities, including those with challenging behaviors , who can remain calm, consistent, and safety-focused in high-stress situations.

Responsibilities

  • Assist clients with Activities of Daily Living (ADLs), including bathing, dressing, grooming, toileting, and mobility support
  • Monitor patients’ health status by checking vital signs such as blood pressure, pulse, and temperature; report any concerns promptly
  • Support medication administration following care plans and HIPAA regulations to ensure privacy and safety
  • Provide companionship and emotional support to reduce feelings of loneliness or isolation
  • Prepare nutritious meals aligned with dietary needs and assist with feeding when necessary
  • Maintain a clean and safe environment by performing light housekeeping duties such as cleaning, laundry, and organizing personal spaces
  • Use specialized equipment like Hoyer lifts or wheelchairs safely for heavy lifting or transfer needs
  • Document patient observations, care activities, and any changes in condition accurately in compliance with healthcare standards
  • Collaborate with healthcare professionals to implement individualized care plans for clients with dementia, Alzheimer's, autism, or other developmental disabilities
  • Support clients during outings or community activities to promote social engagement and independence

Experience

  • Prior experience working in home health, assisted living, nursing homes, or group homes is highly preferred
  • Demonstrated knowledge of patient care techniques including assisting with ADLs and medication administration
  • Hands-on experience with patient monitoring tools such as vital signs measurement and health assessments
  • Familiarity with specialized care for individuals with dementia, Alzheimer's disease, or memory care needs
  • Experience working with individuals with developmental disabilities or autism is advantageous
  • Knowledge of safety procedures involving CPR and first aid certification is required; ongoing training preferred
  • Ability to handle physical tasks including heavy lifting using equipment like Hoyer lifts safely and effectively
  • Previous exposure to hospice care or end-of-life support is a plus
  • Strong understanding of HIPAA regulations to ensure confidentiality of patient information
  • Compassionate attitude combined with excellent communication skills to foster trust and rapport.

Qualifications

  • Must be at least 18 years old.
  • High school diploma or equivalent required.
  • Experience working with individuals with disabilities or in home care preferred.
  • CPI, CPR and First Aid certification or ability to obtain within 30 days.
  • Must pass DOJ and FBI background checks.
  • Valid driver’s license and current auto insurance if transporting clients.

Working Conditions

  • Work is performed in the client’s home and community environments.
  • May require evenings, weekends, or overnight shifts.
  • May involve exposure to pets, household allergens, or varied home environments.
  • May require assisting with client mobility, transfers, or lifting up to 50 pounds.
