Special Education Instructional Aide
Job title: Instructional Aide - Special Education
Reports to: Campus Administrator or Special Education Coordinator
Wage/Hour Status Type of position: Hours per week
Non-Exempt Full time or Part-time Monday – Friday (7:30am – 4:00pm)
Salary: Based on Level of Education (See below)
High School Diploma or Equivalent (including AA Degree): $18.00
BA/BS Degree: $19.00
General Description:
Under the direction of the respective Campus Administrator or designee, the Instructional Aide assists a certificated teacher in reinforcing instruction to individual or small groups of students in an assigned classroom; assists in the preparation of instructional materials and implementation of lesson plans; provides routine clerical support and perform related work as required.
Work hours are 7:30am – 4:00pm, Monday-Friday (although these hours may vary and may require occasional evening and weekend work based on organizational needs). Minimal or no travel required, other than visits to other local school sites or the Business Office (as needed).
Major Responsibilities and Duties includes the following: Other duties may be assigned.
- Assists instructional personnel with the development and presentation of learning materials and instructional exercises.
- Tutors individual or small groups of students, reinforcing instruction as directed by the teacher; monitors and oversees student drills, practices and assignments in various subjects.
- Confers with the teacher concerning lesson plans and materials to meet student needs; assists with the implementation of lesson plans.
- Assists students in completing classroom assignments, homework and projects; assure student understanding of classroom rules and procedures; assists students by answering questions, providing proper examples, emotional support, friendly attitude and general guidance.
- Performs a variety of clerical duties in support of classroom activities such as preparing, typing, duplicating and filing instructional materials; maintain student records, attendance and files as assigned; grades student assignments and tests.
- Provides classroom support to the teacher by setting up work areas, bulletin boards and displays, and distributing and collecting papers, supplies and materials.
- Maintains appropriate standards of classroom behavior in the absence of the teacher, using behavioral management techniques and strategies that promote citizenship and socially positive outcomes in students.
- Observes and controls behavior of students in the classroom, lunch areas, playground or other learning environments according to approved procedures; monitors students during outdoor activities as directed; reports progress regarding student performance and behavior to teacher or appropriate coordinator.
- Administers and scores various tests and assessments as directed; prepare mandated reports and documentation as required.
- Operates a variety of classroom and office equipment including audio-visual equipment, a computer and assigned software.
- Assures the health and safety of students by following established practices and procedures; maintains learning environment in a safe, orderly and clean manner.
- May provide interpretation/translation for non-English speaking parents, school personnel and students during phone calls, parent conferences, meetings and assemblies as directed.
- Establishes appropriate relationships with students, actively interacts with students, and demonstrates enthusiasm, intellectual stimulation, and organization.
- Helps to develop each student's self-image and encourage students’ positive attitudes of self-worth and confidence.
- Collaborate with educational support departments (Special Education, ELD, and Counseling Department, etc.) to implement additional techniques to support student success and achievement.
- Maintains professional competence by engaging in professional learning through school trainings, in-service and outside workshops as directed.
- Participates in adjunct duties and/or school-wide supervision of students during out-of-classroom activities as assigned.
- Demonstrate understanding of, and support Lifeline’s mission, vision, value statements, standards, policies and procedures, operating instructions, confidentiality standards, and the code of ethical behavior.

This job primarily operates on a school site and in classrooms, and utilizes typical office equipment (computers, phones, photocopiers, etc.). Physical demands include positioning to lift (should be able to lift or move up to 10 pounds to waist high). While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand; walk; use hands to finger, handle, or feel objects, tools, or controls; reach with hands and arms; talk or hear; and taste or smell.
The employee is occasionally required to sit and stoop, kneel, bend, crouch, or crawl. Generally, the job is 60%, Stationary and 40% moving/traversing. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.
