General Description:
Under the direction of the Special Education Coordinator or Designee, the Behavior Intervention Aide supports students with behavioral, emotional, or developmental needs under the direction of certified professionals. This role involves implementing behavior intervention plans (BIPs), assisting with classroom management, supporting instruction, and helping students develop appropriate social and coping skills. The paraprofessional works one-on-one or in small groups and helps ensure a safe, structured, and supportive environment.
Standard work hours are 8:30 AM – 3:30 PM (these hours may vary and may require occasional evening and weekend work based on organizational needs). Minimal or no travel required, other than visits to other local school sites or the Business Office (as needed).
Major Responsibilities and Duties includes the following: Other duties may be assigned.
Instructional Support:
- Assist in implementing Individualized Education Programs (IEPs) and Behavior Intervention Plans
- Provide academic and behavioral support to students under certified professionals direction.
- Modify classroom materials and instruction for student-specific needs.
- Support students during classroom activities, transitions, and unstructured times (e.g., lunch, recess).
Behavioral Support:
- Monitor, redirect, and reinforce appropriate student behavior using approved strategies.
- Record data on student behavior and progress toward goals.
- Use de-escalation techniques during behavioral incidents.
- Support implementation of positive behavior supports and crisis intervention when necessary.
Supervision and Safety:
- Supervise students in various settings (classroom, hallway, playground, bus, etc.).
- Maintain a safe environment and report any incidents or concerns to appropriate staff.
- Follow safety and emergency procedures in accordance with school policies.
Collaboration:
- Communicate regularly with teachers, therapists, and administrators about student progress and behavior.
- Participate in team meetings, trainings, and professional development.
- Maintain confidentiality of student records and sensitive information.
Administrative Support
- Assist in preparing instructional materials or behavioral tools.
- Keep accurate and timely records, including behavior tracking sheets, daily logs, and reports.
- Perform other duties as assigned by supervising staff.
Qualifications:
High school diploma or equivalent (some positions require an associate degree or paraprofessional certification).
- ABA (Applied Behavior Analysis) certification, training or experience required.
- RBT (Registered Behavorial Technician) certification required.
- Experience working with children, especially those with behavioral or special needs, is preferred.
- Knowledge of behavior management strategies and techniques.
- Patience, empathy, strong communication, and the ability to work under pressure.
Work Environment and Physical Demands:
- May require standing, walking, lifting, bending, and physically assisting students.
- May involve exposure to aggressive behaviors and the need to implement crisis intervention strategies.
- Requires regular interaction with students, staff, and families in a dynamic school environment.
