ROLE SUMMARY

The Emergency Medical Responder is responsible for the assistance of patient care while operating in non-emergency and /or emergency modalities as a rescue unit in accordance with federal, state, and local regulations and directives.

The EMR participates in the delivery of basic life support in a pre-hospital or facility situation. When operating the EMR receives direction from the attendant in charge of patient care and medical issues. The EMR delivers emergency medical care to patients as indicated AIC, medical control or patient care protocols. EMR also is responsible for operating the assigned vehicle.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Time will be spent participating in the delivery of basic life support in a pre-hospital or facility situation.
  • Operate the ambulance in accordance with safety rules and regulations; company policies; federal, state and local laws, regulations and statutes.
  • Responsible for completing and recording all required reports.
  • Assuring that assigned vehicle is completely stocked and in good running order at the beginning of each shift, after every response and at the end of each shift.
  • Cleaning patient care compartment and vehicle in accordance with Company adopted infection control and maintenance guidelines.
  • Fuel unit at the end of every shift to maintain emergency readiness of unit.
  • Ability to lift, carry, and balance a minimum of 125 pounds equally distributed and 250 pounds with assistance, to a height of 33 inches and a distance of 10 feet.
  • Maintaining office, lounge, bunk room, and vehicle parking area in a neat, clean and orderly fashion.
  • Attending training sessions and orientations as required to maintain valid Maryland EMR Certification and requirements of the Company.
  • Maintain all required certifications as an active EMS provider and supply the Human Resources Department with valid copies of all certifications and driver’s license prior to their expiration date.

REPORTING RELATIONSHIP

The Emergency Medical Responder (EMR) reports directly to the assigned Operations Supervisor or designated Field Supervisor.

While operating on a unit, the EMR functions under the clinical direction of the Attendant in Charge and in accordance with established medical protocols and medical control direction.

The EMR is expected to follow the established chain of command for operational, clinical, and administrative matters.

Questions or concerns regarding patient care, safety, compliance, or workplace conduct should be escalated through the appropriate supervisory channels.

The EMR does not have supervisory responsibilities unless formally assigned by management.

 

WORK ENVIRONMENT & TRAVEL

The work environment for this position includes:

  • Fast-paced, unpredictable emergency and non-emergency medical settings.
  • Exposure to physical, emotional, and environmental stressors, including but not limited to adverse weather conditions, traffic hazards, loud noises, and emergency scenes.
  • Regular interaction with patients, families, healthcare professionals, law enforcement, fire personnel, and the general public.
  • Potential exposure to bloodborne pathogens, infectious diseases, and other hazardous materials, requiring strict adherence to infection control and safety procedures.
  • Work may be performed in confined spaces, uneven terrain, and varied indoor and outdoor environments.
  • This position requires the ability to remain calm, focused, and professional in high-pressure situations.

 

Travel Requirements

  • Local travel is required as part of normal job duties, including transport of patients between facilities, residences, and healthcare locations.
  • Travel occurs primarily within assigned service areas but may include surrounding jurisdictions based on operational needs.
  • Must possess and maintain a valid driver’s license and be eligible to operate company vehicles in accordance with company policy and insurance requirements.
Qualifications:

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Current State EMR Certification
  • Current CPR, Healthcare Provider Issue
  • Valid Driver’s License and no negative points.
  • Pass a criminal background check
  • FEMA ICS 100, 200, 700 & 800c
  • HAZMAT

 

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

The physical demands described here are representative of those required to successfully perform the essential functions of this position:

  • Frequent standing, walking, bending, kneeling, lifting, pushing, and pulling.
  • Ability to lift, carry, and balance a minimum of 125 pounds independently and up to 250 pounds with assistance, consistent with patient handling requirements.
  • Ability to safely load and unload patients and equipment into and out of ambulances and facilities.
  • Manual dexterity and physical coordination sufficient to operate medical equipment, stretchers, and vehicles.
  • Ability to wear required personal protective equipment (PPE) for extended periods.
