In this new endeavor and exciting partnership we will provide a seamless, high-acuity response system, delivering 911 emergency services and essential inpatient clinical support across the St. Jude campus and its properties. Our mission is to enhance safety and well-being for every patient, visitor, and staff member who dedicates their lives to this incredible cause. We are currently seeking candidates to fill important roles. At this time we are taking applications for the position of Paramedic. The Paramedic will provide Advanced pre-hospital emergency medical care, stabilization, and transport for critically ill and injured patients, in response to 911 calls within the hospital's dedicated service area and/or campus. This is the highest level of pre-hospital clinical licensure utilized on the 911 service. When not engaged in emergency response, the Paramedic functions as an integral member of the hospital’s clinical team, providing in-patient support, and assisting with procedures under the direct supervision of a Registered Nurse (RN) or physician, with guidance from Medical Direction via standing orders or protocols. The Paramedic operates under the comprehensive scope of practice defined by the Tennessee EMS Division and St. Jude Medical Director’s protocols. In addition the candidate should have the willingness to participate in training, conduct training, and involvement in community relations on site.

Essential Duties And Responsibilities
I. Emergency 911 Response and Transport (Pre-Hospital)
- Clinical Leadership: Act as the lead medical authority on the ambulance unit, responsible for all patient care decisions and scene management in the pre-hospital environment until patient transfer is complete.
- Advanced Patient Care: Perform comprehensive patient assessment, formulate a field impression, and provide definitive Advanced Life Support (ALS) care and interventions, including, but not limited to:
- Advanced Airway Management: Endotracheal intubation, continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP), and mechanical ventilation management (if credentialed).
- Pharmacological Interventions: Administer a wide array of medications via various routes (IV, IO, IM, etc.) per protocol or Medical Control orders.
- Cardiac Management: Perform and interpret 12-lead Electrocardiograms (EKG/ECGs), synchronized cardioversion, defibrillation, and transcutaneous pacing.
- Invasive Procedures: Establish Intravenous (IV) and Intraosseous (IO) access.
- Scene Management: Ensure scene safety, triage patients in mass casualty incidents (MCI), and coordinate with internal and external agencies (Police, Fire).
- Communication: Provide concise, comprehensive, and accurate patient reports to Medical Control/Receiving Facility personnel.
- Documentation: Complete timely and detailed electronic Patient Care Reports (PCRs) documenting all assessment findings, treatments, patient condition changes, and transfer of care.
- Any other responsibilities deemed necessary by LifeCare or St.Jude.
In periods of low pre-hospital call volume, and as directed by hospital need, the Paramedic will utilize their clinical skills to support patient care under standing orders or protocols to be determined, but may include:
- Direct Patient Care Support: Assist nurses and other clinical staff with patient care activities in designated units that commensurate with AEMT training.
- Clinical Skills: Perform procedures within the AEMT scope of practice and hospital policy, such as:
- Obtaining and monitoring vital signs and patient data collection.
- Assisting with patient mobilization, ambulation, and transport within the hospital.
- Maintaining peripheral IV lines and monitoring IV fluid administration.
- Assisting during Code situations (e.g., chest compressions, bag-valve-mask ventilations) and rapid response events.
- Maintaining and accessing existing invasive lines (e.g., PICC lines, Central lines) and managing infusions, if specifically trained and credentialed by the hospital.
- Performing phlebotomy and assisting with specimen collection.
- Inserting and maintaining IV access.
- Assisting in resuscitation efforts (e.g., performing advanced airway skills, medication administration during codes).
- Equipment and Supply Readiness: Maintain and restock all emergency equipment, transport apparatus, and supplies within the assigned unit or transport area, ensuring immediate readiness.
- Safety and Compliance: Adhere to all hospital policies, infection control procedures (e.g., Universal Precautions), and regulatory requirements (e.g., The Joint Commission, CMS).
- Monitoring and Documentation: Apply and monitor patient telemetry, perform serial EKGs, and accurately document all delegated care activities within the electronic health record (EHR).
- Inter-Facility Transport: Participate in transports of patients between buildings or residences within the St.Jude campus or properties, maintaining a high level of patient monitoring and intervention throughout the transfer process.
- Training & Readiness: Participate in hospital safety and quality improvement initiatives; check and maintain all emergency equipment and supplies in assigned clinical areas and on the ambulance.
- Thorough knowledge of all principles, concepts, and techniques of the EMS profession and the Tennessee Paramedic Scope of Practice.
- Expert knowledge of current pediatric and adult emergency medical protocols and advanced critical care principles.
- Ability to exercise independent judgment and critical thinking in high-stress, rapidly evolving environments.
- Exceptional communication, interpersonal, and team collaboration skills, particularly in communicating complex medical information.
- Physical ability to perform all essential functions, including prolonged standing, heavy lifting (up to 150 lbs. with assistance), and working in confined spaces.
Required Licensure and Certification
- Current and valid Paramedic (EMT-P) license issued by the State of Tennessee, or ability to obtain licensure in the State of Tennessee within 6 months of employment if licensed as a provider in a participating Compact state.
- Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.
- Current Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certification.
- Current Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) or Pediatric Education for Prehospital Professionals (PEPP) certification.
- Valid Tennessee Class D Driver's License with an acceptable driving record.
- Certification in Emergency Vehicle Operations Course (EVOC) or equivalent.
- Graduate of an accredited Paramedic program required (Associate's or Bachelor's degree preferred).
- A minimum of one (1) year of continuous, full-time experience on an Advanced Life Support (ALS) ambulance, 911 experience is highly preferred.
