What are the responsibilities and job description for the InterLibrary Loan Clerk position at Library System of Lancaster County?
Job Summary: The Interlibrary (ILL) Loan Clerk processes ILL requests by borrowing items from libraries outside the Library System of Lancaster County for Lancaster County patrons and loaning items owned by Lancaster County public libraries to libraries outside the Library System of Lancaster County. This person manages all day-to-day aspects of the ILL process including locating, shipping, tracking items and communicating with patrons.
Essential Functions
All Staff:
1. Follows the LSLC guiding principles.
2. Meets continuing education goals.
3. Prioritizes work in accordance with departmental goals.
4. Serves as an integral member of and contributes to leadership for the Department.
5. Contributes to discussions of departmental activities and presents ideas for improvement.
6. Collaborates and assists with projects outside of the Department to further LSLC strategic goals.
7. Resolves member library questions and issues.
8. Creates documentation and procedures in relation to work.
Position Specific:
1. Places Interlibrary Loan requests for library customers using standard library industry tools.
2. Fills requests from libraries outside of Lancaster District.
3. Manages shipping, receiving and processing of all ILL items.
4. Interacts with the public via phone and email to ensure services are delivered in a timely and accurate manner.
5. Tracks monthly usage.
6. Explains policies and procedures to staff and customers.
7. Creates invoices for lost items.
8. Assists with the promotion of ILL services.
9. Performs related or similar duties as directed or assigned.
Duties are performed in accordance with proven management techniques and professional library practices.
Education and Experience:
1. High school diploma. Some college preferred.
2. Previous clerical experience, customer service experience or library experience.

7. Strong organizational skills, including punctuality and attention to detail.
8. Basic knowledge of or quick aptitude in learning how to use standard office software (Microsoft Office/Windows), email and equipment; ability to learn System or industry-specific software and equipment; knowledge of or ability to learn basic website editing.
9. Possession of or the ability to obtain a valid PA Driver’s License at employee expense.
Position Specific:
Interlibrary Loan:
1. Must have a working knowledge of computers, MS productivity tools, and similar.
2. Be highly detail oriented and organized and be able to follow standard procedures and processes.
3. Possess good problem-solving skills.
4. Ability to obtain child abuse clearances and pass required criminal background checks.
Physical and Environmental Conditions:
Work typically requires moderate physical effort in the handling of library materials, boxes or equipment. Work may occasionally demand strenuous effort in the handling of heavy boxes or materials. Work may require sitting or standing for extended periods of time.
The work environment involves everyday risks or discomforts which require normal safety precautions typical of such places as offices, training rooms and libraries, e.g., use of safe workplace practices with office equipment, avoidance of trips and falls, observance of fire regulations.
