This position serves as the Head, Acquisitions and Outreach Section, within the Manuscript Division of the Special Collections Directorate. The incumbent reports directly to the Chief and is a key member of the administrative and supervisory staff of the Manuscript Division, which holds arguably the most comprehensive collection of personal papers and organizational records relating to American history and culture ever assembled. The incumbent demonstrates a high degree of independence, exercises judgment, makes immediate decisions, and takes necessary actions in establishing sectional priorities and directing a group of employees in key areas of performance, including the identification and acquisition of collections; historical research and interpretation; and public programming, advanced reference, consultation, and liaison services. The incumbent participates in discussions and meetings with the Chief and other section heads, as well as interdivisional meetings, concerning policies and procedures affecting personnel, acquisitions, processing, digitization, reference, and outreach. Serves as the Acting Chief when assigned.
