What are the responsibilities and job description for the Executive Underwriter, Excess Casualty position at Liberty Mutual Insurance Group?
Risk selection & underwriting: Assess new and renewal submissions (including primary and underlying layers), determine pricing, terms and limits, and document underwriting decisions. Evaluate attachment points, underlying policy adequacy and conditions for umbrella/stacked excess placements. Apply delegated authority and seek approvals or recommend quality exceptions when appropriate to optimize profitability. Umbrella coverage & program oversight: Underwrite and manage umbrella business by verifying underlying limits, endorsements and exclusions; setting appropriate attachment points and limits; ensuring program compliance (including any GRS or other umbrella program guidelines); and escalating or documenting exceptions when required. Advise brokers on documentation expectations and acceptable underlying coverage. Deal development & negotiation: Prepare proposals (including umbrella-compliant terms), present terms to agents/brokers, and negotiate to close business that aligns with portfolio strategy, risk appetite, and umbrella program requirements. Agent & broker relationship management: Build and maintain strong relationships with key agents and brokers through proactive outreach, site visits, renewal meetings and timely service to grow a high-quality pipeline for both excess and umbrella products. Educate partners on umbrella features, attachment conditions, and documentation needs. Portfolio management: Monitor and analyze portfolio performance, identify concentration/coverage gaps (including umbrella exposures and underlying layer concentrations), and execute targeted marketing plans to improve growth, diversification and profitability. Documentation & compliance: Maintain comprehensive, audit-ready files that reflect risk selection rationale, umbrella-specific approvals or exceptions, and compliance with regulatory and company guidelines. Leadership & mentoring: Coach and mentor underwriters and account analysts, share technical expertise on excess and umbrella structures, and provide regular feedback and case guidance. Continuous improvement: Participate in process improvement initiatives, contribute ideas, and use data and tools to increase efficiency and underwriting consistency. Bachelor's degree or equivalent; advanced/industry certification (CPCU, AU, or equivalent) preferred. 5 years underwriting experience in excess liability or casualty lines; demonstrated success managing complex accounts and delegated authority. Specific experience with umbrella/umbrella programs and familiarity with GRS umbrella coverage, guidelines, and documentation requirements strongly preferred. Strong technical underwriting skills: evaluation of underlying layers, attachment analysis, pricing, policy terms and reinsurance awareness. Proven track record of developing broker relationships and negotiating placements, including program/umbrella solutions. Excellent verbal and written communication, presentation, and decision-making skills. Ability to analyze portfolio-level metrics and translate findings into action plans. Supervisory or mentoring experience preferred.
