Position Overview

The Building Substitute provides consistent instructional support within a single assigned school by serving as the primary substitute for classroom teachers and assisting with the daily operation of the building. This full-time position ensures continuity of instruction, maintains a positive learning environment, and supports students and staff by providing dependable classroom coverage and additional assistance as needed. Building Substitutes become an integral part of the school community, building relationships with students, teachers, and staff throughout the school year.

Key Responsibilities

Classroom Coverage

  • Provide classroom instruction and supervision in the absence of the regular teacher across various grade levels and subject areas.
  • Follow lesson plans and instructional materials provided by the classroom teacher to ensure continuity of learning.
  • Adapt instruction, when appropriate, to meet the needs of students while maintaining classroom expectations.

Instructional Support

  • Maintain student engagement through effective instructional practices and classroom management.
  • Assist students with assignments, classroom activities, and instructional technology.
  • Support teachers and administrators with instructional tasks as assigned.

Classroom Management

  • Establish and maintain a safe, respectful, and productive learning environment.
  • Implement school and classroom behavior expectations consistently.
  • Supervise students during instructional periods and other assigned duties to ensure student safety.

Student Supervision

  • Monitor students during arrival, dismissal, lunch, recess, hallways, and other assigned supervision responsibilities.
  • Promote positive student behavior and encourage respectful interactions.
  • Ensure student safety by following district procedures and emergency protocols.

School & Staff Collaboration

  • Build positive working relationships with students, teachers, administrators, and support staff.
  • Communicate effectively with teachers regarding classroom activities, student progress, and any concerns that arise during assignments.
  • Work collaboratively with building staff to support the educational goals of the school.

Administrative & Building Support

  • Complete attendance, daily reports, and other required documentation.
  • Provide feedback to classroom teachers regarding instructional activities completed during their absence.
  • Assist with non-instructional duties and provide support in other areas of the building as assigned.
  • Demonstrate flexibility by covering classrooms, assisting with interventions, or supporting building operations throughout the school day.

Qualifications

Required Qualifications

  • Hold a valid Kansas Emergency Substitute Teaching License.
  • Minimum of 60 college credit hours from a regionally accredited institution.
  • Strong communication, organizational, and classroom management skills.
  • Ability to establish positive relationships with students and staff.
  • Ability to adapt quickly to changing classroom assignments and instructional needs.
  • Commitment to maintaining confidentiality and professionalism.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Previous experience working in an educational setting.
  • Experience with classroom management and student engagement strategies.
  • Knowledge of instructional technology and Google Workspace.
  • Bilingual or multilingual abilities are a plus.

Terms of Employment

  • Full-time position assigned to one school building.
  • Work Schedule: Eight hours daily with a 30-minute lunch break.
  • Contract Days: As determined by the Board of Education.
  • Timekeeping: Employees will utilize the district's time management system to clock in and out daily.
  • Fringe Benefits: As determined by the Board of Education.
  • Reports To: Building Principal or Designee.

Instructional Assistance & Duties

Student Contact Days

  • Provide classroom instruction and supervision during teacher absences.
  • Maintain classroom routines and instructional continuity.
  • Support students academically and behaviorally throughout the school day.
  • Supervise students during assigned duties including lunch, recess, hallways, and arrival/dismissal.
  • Assist teachers and administrators with additional instructional or supervisory responsibilities as needed.
  • Build positive relationships with students while maintaining a consistent presence within the assigned school.

Non-Student Contact Days

  • Assist with classroom preparation, instructional materials, and organizational tasks.
  • Support building initiatives, intervention programs, and administrative duties as assigned.
  • Participate in school planning and preparation activities.

Professional Development

  • Attend district and building professional development sessions as assigned.
  • Participate in training related to classroom management, instructional strategies, safety procedures, and district initiatives.
  • Continue developing skills that support effective instruction and student success.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Physical Requirements / Environmental Conditions

  • Ability to stand, walk, sit, bend, stoop, kneel, reach, and move throughout the school day.
  • Ability to lift, carry, push, or pull classroom materials and equipment.
  • Frequent interaction with students, staff, and families.
  • May require travel between classrooms or other areas within the assigned building.
  • Work is performed primarily in a classroom and school environment.
