Position Title: Secondary School Counselor

Department:    Instruction

SUMMARY:  To implement the district's comprehensive counseling program for secondary studentsto consult with and assist teachersparentsand staff to enhance their effectiveness in helping studentsto protect the confidentiality of student recordsand to provide appropriate support to secondary educational programs

 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:  Other duties may be assigned.

Guidance Curriculum

1. Present information to students in their classrooms relative to the guidance 

curriculum. 

2. Meet with small groups of students outside the classroom to respond to identified 

interests or needs. 

3. Conduct or coordinate presentations and/or seminars to provide information as 

needed or requested. 

Individual Planning: 

4. Assist students in developing immediate and long-range plans by analyzing and 

and evaluating their abilities, interests, and achievements. 

5. Work with students using varied resources in planning personal, educational, and 

occupational goals. 

6. Assist students in making the transition from grade to grade, from school to 

career, or from school to additional training. 

7. Participate in the intervention team process or school support team. 

Responsive Services: 

8. Provide individual counseling for students in the areas of personal/social, 

educational/academic, and career education. 

9. Provide small group counseling based on student surveys of interest and need. 

10.  Provide consultation and feedback to parents, staff members, and community 

agencies regarding strategies to help students. 

11. Make referrals to outside sources when extended counseling or support is 

necessary. 

12. Counsel and support students and their families facing emergency situations and 

make appropriate outside referrals. 

13. Provide campus-wide programs for students to address personal/social, 

educational/ academic, and career education concerns. 

System Support: 

14. Plan and evaluate the counseling program. 

15. Promote positive working relationships with students, staff, and members of the 

community. 

16. Serve in an advisory capacity to support other programs in the school and 

community and to gain support for the guidance program. 

17. Pursue continuous professional growth by keeping current with educational 

developments and literature in the field of school guidance. 

18. Develop and maintain a library of pertinent information available to students, 

parents, and staff. 

19. Perform other tasks and assume other responsibilities as may from time to time be 

assigned. 

 

 

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:

Supervises students and other activities as directed by the building principal.

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE:

Certificate in Guidance Counseling, Masters Degree in Secondary Guidance Counseling, and three years of classroom experience. Must be able to effectively deal with the public and staff both in person and on the phone. 

 

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS:

South Carolina Teaching certificate in Secondary School Counselor

 

LANGUAGE SKILLS:

Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations.  Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals.  Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups or managers, clients, customers, and the general public.

 

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS:

Ability to work with mathematical concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical situations.

 

REASONING ABILITY:

Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions.  Ability to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions in mathematical or diagram form and deal with several abstract and concrete variables.

 

 

OTHER SKILLS and ABILITIES:

Ability to apply knowledge of current research and theory to instructional programs; ability to plan and implement lessons based on division and school objectives and the needs and abilities of students to whom assigned.  Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with students, peers, parents and community; ability to speak clear and concisely in written or oral communication.

Such requirements would include, but are not limited to: lifting students, some of whom are of significant weight and age, and may also include lifting items such as wheelchairs and equipment.
