As a certified veterinary technician (CVT) at the Lewis Clark Animal Shelter, you'll be at the heart of lifesaving work--providing compassionate medical care, supporting high-quality shelter medicine and helping animals get a second chance at a loving home. In this fast-paced and rewarding role, you'll work under our shelter veterinarian and collaborate with shelter staff to deliver hands-on care to animals in our shelter and community. Your skills will directly impact the health and wellbeing of every animal that comes through our doors!

Responsibilities:
Compassionate Animal Handling:

  • Practice Fear Free handling techniques
  • Exercise excellent compassion and care when handling or interacting with animal patients, including difficult or combative animals.
  • Assist with moving animals throughout the shelter.

Shelter Animal Care:

  • Accurately prepare, administer and maintain needed medications, vaccinations or treatments and all other medical care set by LCAS shelter veterinarian(s)
  • Perform suture removals, apply bandages, nail trims, weight checks and more
  • Perform or assist in daily rounds of shelter animals
  • Observe, document and communicate medical concerns to shelter veterinarian(s)
  • Assist with new animal admissions, as needed
  • Address foster animal medical concerns promptly and coordinate appointments for veterinary examination.
  • Assist in coordinating off-site emergency medical care in the event shelter veterinarian(s) are unavailable

Veterinarian & Surgical Support:

  • Coordinate with the clinic team to plan each day’s schedule, including surgeries, vet check requests, foster animal check-ins, etc.
  • Assist shelter veterinarian(s) with shelter animal examinations
  • Preparation for surgery days; ensuring all necessary equipment is operational and sterilized and supplies prepped
  • Prep animals for surgical procedures
  • Administer injections as directed by shelter veterinarian(s)
  • Perform surgical and post-surgical monitoring; administer intravenous fluids, monitor vital signs and more
  • Fill post-surgical prescriptions and complete other various surgical duties designated by shelter veterinarian

Record-Keeping and Communications:

  • Maintain detailed medical records and update patient files
  • Effectively communicate and collaborate between shelter departments
  • Ensure animal medical needs are communicated to foster caregivers and potential adopters
  • Promoting professional and positive relationships with our community, volunteers, donors, staff and other surrounding animal welfare organizations
  • Demonstrate compassion, warmth, courtesy and professionalism while interacting with clients
  • Make surgery appointment reminder calls for shelter foster pets and privately owned pets.

Community Clinic:

  • Provide surgical support to shelter veterinarian(s) with community spay/neuter clinics
  • Participate and assist with LCAS vaccine clinics; drawing up vaccinations, microchips, and parasite control under the direction of the shelter veterinarian
  • Help educate clients on proper care for their pets and LCAS services and providing accurate information to clients concerning fees, LCAS policies and more

Team Development:

  • Supervise, train, support and motivate an engaged medical team
  • Participate in and designate daily tasks

Administrative Duties:

  • Manage inventory and order medical supplies as needed
  • Maintain accurate records in shelter database; protecting organization and client information
  • Become Fear Free Certified (on-site training)

Required Skills & Abilities:

  • Previous experience in a veterinary clinic or similar field
  • Strong understanding of veterinary medical terminology and procedures
  • Competency in basic laboratory procedures and use of diagnostic equipment
  • Ability to restrain and handle animals safely and compassionately
  • Commitment to ethical and professional standards in veterinary care
  • Adept at handling complex or high-stress interactions and situations
  • Ability to successfully work in a fast-paced and emotionally demanding environment
  • Attention to detail and ability to follow precise medical instructions
  • Strong decision-making skills
  • Strong computer skills; ability to learn LCAS-specific computer programs quickly
  • Excellent communication skills for interacting with veterinarians, pet owners, and team members
  • Able to manage prolonged periods of repetitive movement and stationary positions.

Employment Requirements:

  • Completion of an accredited veterinary technology program
  • Certification or licensure as a Veterinary Technician (CVT, LVT, or RVT); depending on state requirements
  • Continuing education credits relevant to veterinary technology
  • 18 years or older
  • Clean criminal record; ability to pass a background check
  • Can successfully pass a pre-employment drug screening
  • Possess a current and valid driver’s license
