Brief Description

Lewis and Clark County Public Works is recruiting for a Mechanic/Equipment Operator – Landfill. Under general supervision of the Landfill Manager, this position is responsible for the planning, budgeting, organizing, directing and performing all county solid waste vehicle and equipment maintenance and repair, operating heavy equipment (compactor/scraper/loaders etc.), water truck and haul trucks (roll offs (w/trailer), tilt deck tow truck (w/winch), semi tractor/trailers etc.), to provide support of landfill operations to include junk vehicle hauling through State of Montana Junk Vehicle Removal Program and heavy equipment and supply hauling.

Who We Are

The County Public Works Department is responsible for the following divisions or areas of services.

  • Public Works Administration
  • Roads, Bridge, and Sign Divisions
  • Vehicle Maintenance
  • Solid Waste Division
  • Building Maintenance Division

Public Works Administration oversees the administration and financial operations of all programs, services, and projects of the Lewis and Clark County Public Works Department.

The Road, Bridge, and Sign Divisions are responsible for maintaining County roads and bridges. During the winter they provide County residents with snow removal services such as plowing and sanding. They oversee the design and reconstruction of existing roads and bridges, perform maintenance projects such as pothole repairs, chip seals, striping, signage, safety modifications, drainage, and storm water improvements.

The Vehicle Maintenance Division is responsible for the operation and maintenance of County vehicles. This includes large equipment such as graders, backhoes, loaders, snowplows, dump, patch, and water trucks. They also perform light vehicle maintenance on pickups and sedans.

The City of Helena Solid Waste Division is responsible for the management of the Lewis and Clark County Landfill, the Marysville Container Site, the closed Scratch Gravel Landfill, and represents the Department of Health on the Lincoln and Augusta Solid Waste Boards.

Requirements

The knowledge, skills, and abilities required for this position are acquired through a combination of education and experience equivalent to high school graduation or equivalent and three (3) years’ experience as a heavy equipment mechanic doing overhaul, repair and maintenance work. Relevant apprenticeship program/Vo tech certificate preferred. Valid Class A commercial driver’s license with tanker endorsement preferred. Class A CDL training and certification available. Must be able to obtain a Class A CDL certificate within 6 months of hire date. Journeyman or ASAE rating preferred AND two (2) years technical or factory school education OR one year equipment operation preferred.

Summary

Duties

  • Performs vehicle and equipment maintenance and repair;
  • Inspects gasoline or diesel-powered landfill equipment to determine repair and maintenance needs;
  • Performs regular maintenance;
  • Makes major repairs to all equipment including but not limited to trucks, loaders, scraper, landfill compactors, auxiliary engines, air compressors, and hydraulic hoists and pumps;
  • May fabricate custom parts for equipment and attachments;
  • Prepares orders, estimates cost of labor and parts, writes specifications; prepares requisitions for materials, parts, tools and related equipment;
  • Participate and assist in budgeting process to include shop, repair, and maintenance CIP recommendations and general budgeting updates; Maintains inventories, prepares and maintains records and reports, inspects work for completeness and correctness, meets with suppliers and technical support personnel;
  • Operates heavy equipment (compactor/scraper/loaders etc.);
  • Operates water truck to provide support of landfill operations and maintains usage report;
  • Responds to citizen inquiries and directs customers to appropriate waste deposit site;
  • Maintains and updates various landfill data and activity logs;
  • Provides light office support (customer accounts and payments);
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

  • Develop maintenance schedule, overhaul, repair and maintain heavy and light equipment;
  • Perform scheduled and non-scheduled equipment inspections and repairs;
  • Troubleshoot, diagnose and repair vehicle systems and components;
  • Weld overhead, vertical or out-of-position;
  • Design, fabricate and layout welding projects;
  • Use various types of cutting and grinding tools according to prescribed standards;
  • Weld steel, cast steel, cast iron, brass, aluminum, stainless steel;
  • Maintain shop records;
  • Ability to participate and assist in the budgeting process to include shop, repair, and maintenance CIP recommendations and general budgeting updates;
  • Understand and carry out oral and written instructions;
  • Communicate effectively orally and in writing;
  • Establish effective working relationships with fellow employees, supervisors, and citizens.

Special Requirements

  • Valid Class A commercial driver’s license with tanker endorsement preferred. Class A CDL training and certification available. Must be able to obtain a Class A CDL certificate within 6 months of hire date.
  • Must be able to pass a pre-employment drug test.

Physical Demands

Duties are performed in both indoor and outdoor environments where hazards and discomforts are generally controlled and modifiable. Position performs work in all types of weather in the dust, dirt and debris. This position must be able to stand, twist, stoop, reach, and push, pull, move and lift up to 50 pounds occasionally and 100 pounds on a brief and random basis. Position requires occasional contact with fellow employees and citizens. May be required to work weekends and holidays.
