Who We Are The County Public Works Department is responsible for the following divisions or areas of services.
This includes large equipment such as graders, backhoes, loaders, snowplows, dump, patch, and water trucks.
They also perform light vehicle maintenance on pickups and sedans The City of Helena Solid Waste Division is responsible for the management of the Lewis and Clark County Landfill, the Marysville Container Site, the closed Scratch Gravel Landfill, and represents the Department of Health on the Lincoln and Augusta Solid Waste Boards. The Building Maintenance Division is responsible for the maintenance and operation of the following County-owned buildings.
Must be able to obtain a Class A certificate within 6 months of hire date. Special Requirements
Position performs work in all types of weather in the dust, dirt and debris.
This position must be able to stand, twist, stoop, reach, and push, pull, move and lift up to 50 pounds occasionally and 100 pounds on a brief and random basis.
Position requires regular contact with fellow employees and occasional contact with citizens.

- Landfill. Under general supervision Solid Waste Manager and Landfill Supervisor, this position operates heavy equipment (compactor/scraper/loaders etc.), water truck and haul trucks (roll offs (w/trailer), tilt deck tow truck (w/winch), semi tractor/trailers etc.), to provide support of landfill operations to include hauling service from Marysville, Augusta, and Lincoln Transfer Sites, junk vehicle hauling through State of Montana Junk Vehicle Removal Program and heavy equipment supply hauling. This position is full-time, requiring 40 hours per week.

- Operates heavy equipment (compactor/scraper/loaders etc.);
- Compacts, moves and buries waste in multiple landfill cells;
- Sets grades, coordinates stormwater run-on/run-off mitigation;
- Maintains interior access routes and roads;
- Polices grounds for wind-blown debris and coordinates landfill litter control measures;
- Assists in daily/weekly/monthly litter picking duties both inside and outside landfill perimeter;
- Examines waste for oil, large appliances, hazardous materials and unacceptable materials;
- Process green waste and biosolids in the compost operation, temperature monitoring, maintaining activity logs;
- Operates water truck to provide support of landfill operations and maintains usage report;
- Responds to citizen inquiries and directs customers to appropriate waste deposit site;
- Maintains and updates various data and activity logs;
- Provides light office support (customer accounts and payments); performs light maintenance;
- Performs other duties as assigned.

- Knowledge of state statutes regarding solid waste disposal and management;
- Knowledge of state and federal statures regarding composting and composting with biosolids;
- Knowledge of state statues regarding Class A/Class B hauling requirements;
- Landfill and Public Works Department policies and procedures;
- Lewis and Clark County policies and procedures; safety regulations and requirements;
- Methods, practices, and procedures for solid waste management;
- Safe equipment and various haul truck operating practices and procedures;
- Various equipment and haul truck operation and maintenance procedures.Examples of Skills & Abilities
- Ability to operate heavy equipment, including compactor/scraper/loaders etc., according to prescribed standards;
- Ability to operate haul trucks, including roll offs (w/trailer), flatbed winch truck, semi tractor/trailer etc., according to prescribed standards;
- Ability to operate water truck and various landfill equipment, according to prescribed standards;
- Read and understand construction plans, establish critical grades and contours illustrated in engineered design plans;
- Use hand tools, including chain saw, packer, jackhammer, post pounders etc., according to prescribed standards;
- Understand and carry out oral and written instructions;
- Communicate effectively orally and in writing;
- Provide support and assistance throughout the landfill, compost, and hauling operations;
- Establish effective working relationships with fellow employees, supervisors, and citizens. Qualifications The knowledge, skills, and abilities required for this position are a combination of education and experience equivalent to high school graduate, one (1) year heavy equipment operation, hauling/transporting, landfilling, and composting experience preferred.
Must be able to obtain a Class A certificate within 6 months of hire date. Special Requirements
- Valid Class A commercial driver's license with tanker endorsement preferred. Class A CDL training and certification available.
- Must be able to pass a pre-employment drug test.Physical DemandsDuties are generally performed in both indoor and outdoor environments where hazards and discomforts are generally controlled and modifiable.
