The Controller is a key member of the finance leadership team responsible for overseeing all accounting operations, financial reporting, and internal controls for a fast-growing solar energy company serving residential, commercial, and enterprise customers. This role ensures accurate financial information, strong cost accounting practices, and timely month-end and year-end close processes. The Controller also plays a critical role in supporting audits and partnering with the tax team to ensure compliance with federal, state, and energy-specific tax regulations.
Given the company’s focus on delivering electricity solutions through solar generation and energy services, this role is highly involved in cost allocation across generation assets, installation projects, energy sales contracts, and customer programs.
Key Responsibilities
Cost Accounting & Energy Project Finance
Lead cost accounting processes across solar installation projects, energy generation assets, and customer contracts.
Develop and maintain cost allocation models for hardware, labor, interconnection, maintenance, and energy production.
Track and analyze project-level profitability for residential, commercial, and utility-scale installations.
Partner with operations and engineering teams to ensure accurate capitalization of solar assets and depreciation tracking.
Support pricing, margin analysis, and profitability insights for electricity offerings and power purchase agreements (PPAs).
Month-End & Financial Close
Own the monthly, quarterly, and annual close processes to ensure accurate and timely financial reporting.
Review journal entries, account reconciliations, accruals, and revenue recognition (including long-term energy contracts).
Ensure compliance with GAAP and company accounting policies.
Maintain and improve close calendar, processes, and documentation to increase efficiency and accuracy.
Financial Reporting & Controls
Prepare internal financial statements and management reporting packages for leadership.
Design and maintain strong internal controls over financial reporting (SOX readiness if applicable).
Ensure proper revenue recognition for energy sales, incentives, renewable energy credits (RECs), and subscription-based energy programs.
Monitor balance sheet integrity and ensure accuracy across complex contract structures.
Audit Preparation & Support
Lead annual financial statement audit preparation and coordination with external auditors.
Provide documentation, schedules, and reconciliations required for audit testing.
Resolve audit findings and implement process improvements based on auditor recommendations.
Serve as primary accounting point of contact during audit fieldwork.
Tax Team Support
Collaborate with the tax team on federal, state, and energy-specific tax compliance.
Support preparation of schedules for investment tax credits (ITC), production tax credits (PTC), depreciation (MACRS), and other renewable energy incentives.
Provide financial data and supporting documentation for tax filings and audits.
Assist with structuring analysis for new projects, partnerships, and financing arrangements.
Leadership & Process Improvement
Build and lead a high-performing accounting team (if applicable).
Implement scalable accounting systems and automation to support company growth.
Improve financial processes across procurement, project accounting, billing, and revenue recognition.
Partner with FP&A, operations, and engineering teams to ensure financial alignment with business performance.
Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field (CPA strongly preferred).
7–12 years of progressive accounting experience, including prior Controller or Assistant Controller roles.
Experience in renewable energy, utilities, construction accounting, or asset-intensive industries strongly preferred.
Strong knowledge of GAAP, revenue recognition (ASC 606), and fixed asset accounting.
Experience with project-based accounting and long-term contract revenue recognition.
Familiarity with tax credits and incentives in the renewable energy sector preferred.
Proficiency with ERP systems (NetSuite, SAP, or similar).
Strong leadership, communication, and cross-functional collaboration skills.
