Description

Overview

The New York Public Library’s (NYPL) Adult Cultural Programming department supports the delivery of branch programs to the general adult population and develops creative and cultural programming for diverse communities across New York City.

This position is responsible for managing AV production for public-facing NYPL events in branches across Manhattan, the Bronx, and Staten Island. In addition to public-facing programming, this position will also support internal AV production needs, including staff meetings and events, as well as production-related staff training and support.

We are looking for someone we can count on to:

Own

  • The creation of production best practices and infrastructure for high-level branch events
  • Partnering with internal and external stakeholders, including AV vendors, to ensure event staffing and production needs are met
  • Stage management for high-level branch events, including leading the run of show process and making time sensitive production decisions
  • The supervision of hands-on setup and operation of AV equipment for branch events

Teach

  • Professional development opportunities for branch staff to share production best practices
  • Audiovisual technology and production skills to branch staff and colleagues
  • And support the development of central production staff on the Adult Cultural Programming team

Learn

  • NYPL’s mission, programming priorities, and goals
  • The AV capabilities of branch spaces and recommend improvements in consultation with relevant departments

Improve

  • The development and/or refinement of event accessibility protocols for branch events
  • Upgrades for all aspects of the event experience at NYPL for audience and participants
  • AV enhancements in branch locations across Manhattan, the Bronx, and Staten Island in partnership with internal stakeholders including Public Programs and IT

Some Expectations For This Role Are That Within

1 month , this person will:

  • Be knowledgeable about the Reading & Engagement department’s goals and objectives
  • Learn stage management responsibilities
  • Plan for ongoing support and expansion of branch programming, with an emphasis on high-level events in outer boroughs

3 Months , This Person Will

  • Maintain regular communication and collaborate with key stakeholders internally and externally
  • Visit NYPL branches to observe branch programs and learn about challenges relating to AV and production
  • Use core internal tools and applications such as Drupal, LAIR, and Workday

6 Months And Beyond , This Person Will

  • Establish strong working relationships with internal and external stakeholders
  • Implement stage management responsibilities
  • Support production of core initiatives including but not limited to: World Literature & Arts Festival, Reading Rhythms, and Get Lit Book Club

Responsibilities

Reporting to the Associate Director, Adult Cultural Programming, this person will:

  • Perform hands-on equipment set-up/strike and operation of professional audio visual equipment including, audio, video, lighting, projection, and staging for events.
  • Coordinate with colleagues on live event production logistics.
  • Work closely with AV vendors, guest talent, and production staff, leading sound checks and managing interactions
  • Troubleshoot live audio reinforcement, video cameras, projectors and lighting equipment
  • Conduct advanced video and audio editing and recording for events
  • Maintain AV equipment inventory and support with scheduled maintenance
  • Coordinate, schedule, and track accessibility services for Adult Cultural Programming events. Work with captioners, ASL interpreters, and other forms of accessibility support, incorporating accessibility features in events when needed
  • Organize and maintain archive of department program recordings and media assets via the NYPL website, external hard drives, and media server/cold storage

Required Education, Experience & Skills

Required Education & Certifications

  • Bachelor’s degree or 4 years of additional related experience

Required Experience

  • 5 years experience working on audio visual production for high-profile events in a fast paced environment

Required Skills

  • Hands-on technical skills such as operating, maintaining and repairing audio visual equipment
  • Audio engineering for live events at front of house, including operating and configuring wireless mics, wiring sound systems and stages for a range of events, e.g. discussions, panels, meetings, readings, music, and live performance
  • Directing and setting up video and audio for live stream broadcasting/recording of live events and meetings, both in person and remotely
  • Proficient with software such as Keynote, Zoom, YouTube, OBS, and similar presentation and meeting applications
  • Proficient with audio and video editing software, primarily Adobe Creative Cloud
  • Focusing professional lighting fixtures for stage lighting
  • Knowledge of industry standard AV equipment, software, and tools
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Flexibility, professionalism, and ability to manage conflicting priorities
  • Attention to detail and exceptional organizational skills
  • Excellent computer skills, including proficiency in MS Office Suite and Google Suite

Managerial/Supervisory Responsibilities

  • Manage a growing team with one direct report (Associate Producer)
  • Responsible for hiring, training, performance management, and coaching of direct reports
  • Supervise production staff and support with staff professional development.
