Who we are looking for: The statewide Fair Housing Project is seeking a full-time Staff Attorney. The ideal candidate is creative, passionate, and dedicated to advocating for the legal rights of people experiencing housing discrimination. The position involves representing clients in state and federal administrative and court proceedings, as well as conducting community outreach and education. The position requires the ability to communicate effectively with clients and community members and multitask. The position requires occasional travel to other counties.
Why this role matters: The work performed by the individual in this role will support Legal Aid attorneys and staff who devise strategies and pursue legal remedies to help clients obtain successful outcomes.
What you will do:
- Interview potential clients and identify their legal problems.
- Devise strategies for resolving client legal matters.
- Represent eligible clients before North Carolina state and federal courts, and in state and federal administrative proceedings.
- Serve as co-counsel with other LANC attorneys as well as private attorneys as appropriate.
- Collaborate with co-workers, clients, and other legal services providers in projects that affect clients or the client community regionally or statewide.
- Participate in community education and outreach, such as speaking to groups as requested and preparing informational materials.
- Assist Managing Attorney with grant reporting and monitoring on HUD FHIP and other grants and contracts as assigned.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
What you will bring to Legal Aid of North Carolina:
- A juris doctor and a license to practice law in the State of North Carolina
- Ability to communicate well with low-income people, other attorneys, court, and agency personnel, and the general population.
- Ability to perform legal research and writing.
- Demonstrated commitment to relate to and work for the LANC client population.
- Demonstrated commitment to civil rights and fair housing.
- A commitment to the mission and values of Legal Aid of North Carolina and the Fair Housing Project
- The ability to work both independently and as part of a team.
- Public speaking skills and the ability and willingness to prepare and make public presentations about fair housing law.
- Office and basic word-processing skills sufficient to perform the responsibilities of the job.
- No pending North Carolina State Bar disciplinary proceedings
- Prior legal services and litigation experience are a plus.
- Spanish proficiency or fluency is a plus.
