Job DescriptionCompany Overview

Legacy Home Builders is one of the fastest-growing residential developers and builders in North Carolina. We develop, build, lease, sell, and manage entire communities with a long-term vision of becoming a multi-state, vertically integrated real estate company.

Today, we're building hundreds of homes annually. Our goal is to build an organization capable of delivering more than 1,000 homes per year while maintaining exceptional quality, operational excellence, and a strong leadership culture. We are committed to developing leaders, creating scalable systems, and building communities that leave a lasting impact.

Job Overview

The Vice President of Operations serves as the company's second-in-command and is responsible for leading all operational departments while building the executive leadership team that will drive Legacy Home Builders through its next stage of growth.

This is not a traditional operations role. We are looking for a leader who builds organizations—not just manages them.

The ideal candidate has successfully scaled residential construction, homebuilding, or real estate development organizations by developing leaders, implementing systems, improving operational performance, and creating a culture of accountability.

Your mission is simple:

Build an organization that becomes less dependent on the CEO and more dependent on exceptional leaders, scalable systems, and operational excellence.

ResponsibilitiesExecutive Leadership

  • Lead the day-to-day operations of Legacy Home Builders
  • Provide executive oversight for Construction, Purchasing, Land Development, Entitlements & Permitting, Sales Operations, Property Management, Customer Experience & Warranty, and Finance (in partnership with the Controller and CFO)
  • Build, mentor, and develop department directors and executive leaders
  • Conduct weekly executive leadership meetings
  • Drive execution of quarterly and annual strategic initiatives
  • Create clear accountability across every department
  • Support the CEO in achieving long-term strategic objectives

Organizational Development

  • Design organizational structure to support rapid company growth
  • Define roles, responsibilities, and reporting structures
  • Build leadership succession plans
  • Recruit and develop high-performing executive talent
  • Coach department leaders to become independent decision-makers
  • Foster a culture centered around accountability, ownership, and continuous improvement
  • Develop leadership training and professional development programs

Operational Excellence

  • Develop scalable systems and operational processes across the organization
  • Improve communication, scheduling, reporting, accountability, and operational efficiency
  • Standardize KPIs and performance metrics across all departments
  • Implement executive dashboards and reporting tools
  • Lead company-wide process improvement initiatives
  • Drive technology adoption, ERP implementation, and operational automation where appropriate

Financial Leadership

  • Partner with the Controller and CFO to improve company profitability
  • Review departmental budgets and financial performance
  • Monitor operational KPIs and financial metrics
  • Identify opportunities for cost reduction and efficiency improvements
  • Improve gross margins and overall operational performance
  • Support long-term financial planning and growth initiatives

Cross-Functional Leadership

  • Ensure seamless collaboration between land acquisition, development, construction, sales, leasing, warranty, and property management
  • Remove operational bottlenecks and improve communication across departments
  • Align departmental priorities with overall company objectives
  • Improve customer experience through operational consistency

Leadership Development

  • Recruit, mentor, and develop executive-level leaders
  • Build leadership capacity throughout the organization
  • Establish accountability systems that empower leaders to operate independently
  • Develop the next generation of company leadership

Qualifications

  • 10 years of senior operational leadership experience
  • Proven success leading multiple departments or business units
  • Experience scaling a residential homebuilding, real estate development, or construction organization
  • Strong financial, operational, and strategic business acumen
  • Demonstrated success recruiting, developing, and leading executive teams
  • Exceptional leadership, communication, and decision-making skills
  • Experience implementing organizational systems, SOPs, KPIs, and performance reporting
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities
  • Ability to lead organizational change while maintaining operational excellence

Preferred Qualifications

  • Production homebuilding experience
  • Build-to-Rent (BTR) experience
  • Experience leading organizations exceeding $100 million in annual revenue
  • Experience with Lean, EOS, or similar operational excellence frameworks
  • Experience implementing ERP, project management, and reporting systems
  • Bachelor's degree in Business, Construction Management, Engineering, Finance, or a related field
  • MBA or advanced leadership education preferred

First-Year Objectives

  • Build a high-performing executive leadership team
  • Recruit and onboard a Director of Construction
  • Standardize KPIs across every department
  • Implement executive dashboards and reporting systems
  • Improve communication and accountability company-wide
  • Increase operational efficiency while supporting aggressive growth
  • Build the operational infrastructure necessary to scale beyond 1,000 homes annually

What Success Looks Like

Within 18 months:

  • Every operational department is led by a strong director
  • Construction operates through a Director of Construction rather than the CEO
  • Weekly executive meetings are driven by measurable KPIs and data
  • Department leaders solve problems independently
  • The CEO is focused on strategy, capital, acquisitions, partnerships, and growth instead of daily operations
  • Legacy Home Builders is operationally prepared to expand confidently into new markets
