Environmental Health and Safety Manager

Lee Spring Company LLC
Brooklyn, NY Full Time
POSTED ON 6/2/2026
AVAILABLE BEFORE 8/2/2026

The Opportunity

This is a hands-on, plant-floor-present EHS Manager role — not a desk job. Based out of our Brooklyn, NY headquarters for convenient access to travel, you will be the first dedicated EHS professional in the company, taking ownership of a safety program that has solid foundations and real momentum, and building it into a comprehensive, sustainable system across all Lee Spring facilities.

You will work directly with operations leadership, press operators, machinists, and chemical process personnel on a daily basis. You will be expected to know OSHA 29 CFR 1910 inside and out, engage with regulators when needed, and — critically — translate regulatory requirements into practical, workable solutions that our teams can execute.

Over time, this role is expected to help support broader management system initiatives including environmental management systems, operational standardization, audit readiness, and continuous improvement efforts across the company.

Key Responsibilities

Compliance & Regulatory Management

  • Own all OSHA, EPA, and state/local regulatory compliance across all Lee Spring facilities
  • Serve as the primary point of contact for OSHA inspections, agency inquiries, and regulatory correspondence
  • Maintain OSHA 300/300A logs, manage recordkeeping and annual electronic submission requirements
  • Ensure all required permits, registrations, and compliance filings are current and submitted on time
  • Stay current on changes to OSHA 29 CFR 1910, EPA regulations, and Connecticut OSHA/DEEP requirements

Safety Program Development & Maintenance

  • Develop, implement, and maintain written safety programs including Hazard Communication, Lockout/Tagout, Machine Guarding, PPE, Emergency Action Plan, Hearing Conservation, and Respiratory Protection
  • Build and manage the company's Job Hazard Analysis (JHA) program across all machine types and operations
  • Conduct and oversee annual equipment inspections — presses (mechanical, air foot, kick), grinders, coiling machines, wire formers, four-slide machines, hoists, and chemical process equipment
  • Develop and manage chemical safety programs including SDS library, HazCom compliance, and chemical waste disposal coordination
  • Lead the annual PPE hazard assessment process and ensure PPE requirements are documented, enforced, and appropriate for each operation

Machine Guarding & Engineering Controls

  • Evaluate point-of-operation guarding on all powered presses and document guarding decisions using formal hazard assessment methodology
  • Partner with engineering and operations to specify and implement engineering controls — guards, fixtures, light curtains, pull-back devices — as appropriate to each operation
  • Support press die change safety procedures and evaluate guarding requirements when new operations or tooling are introduced

Training & Culture

  • Develop and deliver EHS training programs tailored to Lee Spring's specific operations — new hire orientation, annual refresher, operation-specific training, and supervisor training
  • Lead incident investigation and root cause analysis for all injuries, near-misses, and first aid events; track corrective actions to closure
  • Build and sustain a proactive safety culture — visible floor presence, open communication with operators, and management engagement
  • Lead or support the Safety Committee; drive employee participation in hazard identification

Environmental Management

  • Manage chemical waste disposal program including hazardous waste manifesting, licensed vendor coordination, and EPA/state reporting
  • Ensure wastewater discharge compliance for passivation, degreasing, and other process operations
  • Maintain air emissions compliance for paint spray booth and other regulated sources

Multi-Plant Oversight

  • Travel to all Lee Spring facilities to conduct audits, deliver training, investigate incidents, and ensure program consistency
  • Develop standardized EHS documentation, forms, and inspection programs that apply across all locations
  • Provide EHS guidance and support to plant managers and supervisors at each site

Continuous Improvement & Management Systems (over time)

  • Support development of standardized operational and management system practices across all facilities
  • Assist with future environmental and/or safety management system initiatives, including potential ISO certification efforts (ISO 14001 environmental management system, or comparable)
  • Partner with operations and continuous improvement leadership on audit readiness and cross-functional improvement projects as the EHS program matures

Qualifications:

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Occupational Safety, Environmental Science, Industrial Hygiene, Engineering, or a related field — or equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Minimum 5 years of EHS experience in a manufacturing environment, with demonstrated hands-on responsibility for OSHA compliance
  • Deep working knowledge of OSHA 29 CFR 1910 General Industry standards, particularly machine guarding (1910.212, 1910.217), LOTO (1910.147), HazCom (1910.1200), and PPE (1910.132)
  • Experience managing OSHA inspections and responding to citations or complaints, including informal conferences and abatement documentation
  • Demonstrated ability to write, implement, and maintain formal EHS programs and documentation
  • Experience conducting Job Hazard Analyses and implementing engineering controls in a machining or metal fabrication environment
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills — able to translate regulatory requirements into clear, practical guidance for operators and supervisors
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite; experience with OSHA 300 log management and electronic recordkeeping
  • Experience using AI tools to streamline program development, implementation and data analysis

Preferred Qualifications

  • Certified Safety Professional (CSP), Associate Safety Professional (ASP), or equivalent certification — or actively working toward certification
  • Experience with metal forming, spring manufacturing, or stamping operations
  • Familiarity with 29 CFR 1910.217 mechanical power press requirements, including point-of-operation guarding assessment
  • Experience with chemical process operations — passivation, aqueous cleaning, heat treat, or surface finishing
  • Experience managing hazardous waste programs including manifest preparation and licensed vendor coordination
  • Connecticut OSHA and DEEP regulatory familiarity
  • Multi-site EHS management experience
  • Familiarity with ISO management system standards (ISO 14001 environmental, ISO 45001 occupational health and safety, or ISO 9001 quality) — including audit readiness and certification processes
  • Continuous improvement experience (Lean, Six Sigma, Kaizen) — particularly where it has been applied to EHS programs

What We Offer

  • Competitive salary: $75,000 – $90,000 depending on experience
  • Comprehensive benefits package including medical, dental, vision, and 401(k)
  • Paid time off and holidays
  • A leadership team that is actively invested in building a strong safety culture and will support this role with the resources to do it right
  • The opportunity to be the architect of an EHS program — not just a maintainer of someone else's work
  • A stable, privately held company with a long history and a strong reputation in precision manufacturing

Physical Requirements & Work Environment

This role requires regular presence on the manufacturing floor. The work environment includes exposure to moving mechanical parts, moderate noise levels, chemical process areas, and typical machine shop conditions. Candidates must be able to stand and walk for extended periods, access all areas of the facility including elevated platforms and confined areas, and occasionally lift up to 35 lbs. Appropriate PPE will be provided and required.
