Position: Correctional Nurse
Department: Lee County Sheriff's Department
Reports to: Correctional Nurse Practitioner and Jail Superintendent in charge of the Corrections Division
Classification: Part time, Non-exempt
Salary Level: $35-$40/hr, DOQ
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
- Perform a variety of nursing care functions such as, ordering medications, administering medications, monitoring vital signs, examining inmates using nursing assessment skills and monitoring physical condition and reactions to various treatments, obtaining laboratory specimens and providing emergency treatment.
- Check with the Jail Supervisor to determine if there are any immediate medical concerns and/or any other medical-related information that the Correctional Nurse should be informed of.
- Review all new detainee medical screenings to determine if there are any immediate medical concerns and address them if there are.
- Determine if any new detainees came in with prescription medications. If so, the Correctional Nurse shall verify the identification of the medication and shall also verify that the medication was properly obtained from a licensed medical professional.
- Administer medications during scheduled times throughout the shift.
- Review, respond and triage all medical-related detainee requests.
- Conduct Sick Call visits, determine a treatment plan, and if necessary, confer with the Correctional Nurse Practitioner about concerns, questions or treatment plans.
- Maintain medical records for all detainees.
- Create and maintain Medication Administration Records (MARs) for all detainees receiving medication.
- Conduct medical screening for all detainees within 14 days of confinement.
- Order all prescription medications and return all applicable unused medications to the pharmacy.
- Maintain detailed records of medical supplies and all drugs.
- Conduct all in-house testing, i.e. urine pregnancy test, TB, etc.
- Assist the Correctional Nurse Practitioner during all detainee medical visits.
Hours of Work/Conditions:
The Correctional Nurse will be given wide latitude in their function based on the ability to accomplish tasks and to keep others informed of their activities.

Minimum Qualifications:
- Associate's Degree in Nursing (ADN) or Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN)
- Valid licensure as a registered nurse in Illinois
Preferred Qualifications:
- Basic life support (BLS) certification
- Experience in a correctional facility setting
Work Authorization/Security Clearance:
A background check is required for this position.
