YARD - FORKLIFT OPERATOR / LABORER

Objective of Role
Operate powered industrial trucks to load and unload materials in order to move them to and from storage areas and loading docks, into inventory storage, trucks, or vehicles.

Success Factors

  • Current Certified Forklift License (Forklift and or Equipment operating experience preferred if no license. Employees will be required to pass in house certification.)

Essential Functions
Note: “Yard” includes Inventory Area, Block Yard, Brick Yard, Warehouse, and Misc.

  • Loading and unloading product on /off company and independent trucks with a forklift.
  • Counting and signing off on all tickets to ensure tickets match actual amounts.
  • Report and document ticket discrepancies.
  • Building orders to be loaded on trucks and walk-in customers, which includes physically handling, lifting, stacking, and unstacking product.
  • Loading walk-in customers by hand and or by forklift. Occasionally unloading returns.
  • Storing and maintaining all products in their designated area, whether the product comes from trucks, customers, or plant.
  • Keeping yard clean and organized, including but not limited to regularly picking up broken material, sweeping, re-stacking product, moving product, and picking up trash.
  • Identifying, documenting, and reporting damaged and broken products.
  • Assisting ALL customers, which includes truck drivers, customers, and fellow employees.
  • Performing ALL tasks in a safe and professional manner by watching out for foot traffic, following standards and procedures; and complying with legal regulations.

Forklift maintenance to include:

  • Following operating instructions
  • Troubleshooting breakdowns
  • Performing preventive maintenance and
  • Turn in checklist noting any needed repairs
  • Clear production area by securing and moving finished pallets; moving empty pallets.

Required Skills

  • Safety Management – the ability to use the tools and resources around you to maintain a safe working environment for yourself and others
  • Mechanics and Maintenance – the ability to operate and maintain industrial equipment
  • Documentation Skills – ability to clearly and concisely document inventory management data in a timely manner according to approved processes
  • Reading comprehension – ability to match orders to items being received or shipped and review safety standards and updated procedures and policies
  • Math skills -- ability to calculate loads and add up items on invoices and bills of lading
  • Inventory Control – basic understanding of inventory control principles
  • Physical fitness – warehouse forklift operators should be physically fit to lift, stand, bend, and carry boxes on a daily basis. See physical requirements.
  • Computer skills –basic computer skills to use inventory and warehousing software systems preferred but not required
  • Initiative – ability maintain daily tasks and responsibilities with limited supervision

Work Environment Physical Requirements

  • Ability to lift up to 95 pounds
  • Ability to sit, stand, squat, and stretch repeatedly throughout the work shift
  • Ability to use hands to handle, control, or feel objects, tools, or controls
  • Ability to repeat the same movements for a long period of time
  • Ability to stand and sit for long periods of time
  • Ability to make quick and precise adjustments to machine controls
  • Ability to see details of objects that are more than a few feet away, with or without corrective lenses
  • Ability to see objects that are off to one side while looking forward (peripheral vision)
  • Ability to determine the distance between objects
  • Ability to hear sounds and respond (such as warning alarms)

Work Hours and Schedule

  • Typical work hours and shifts: 7:30 a.m. through 4:00 p.m.
  • Days of week – Monday - Friday
  • Overtime may be scheduled and required.

Work Environment

  • May be indoors or outdoors
  • Non-temperature-controlled environment
  • Exposure to moving equipment and trucks

Education and Experience

  • High School diploma or equivalent
  • Experience operating forklifts preferred but not required
  • Good math, language, and reading skills; basic computer skills may be required
  • Clean driving record and a valid state motor vehicle operator’s license may be required
  • Forklift certification per OSHA standards preferred, but not requiredAcknowledgements
