Job Title: Purchasing Agent (Maritime)
Position Overview
The Maritime Purchasing Agent is responsible for procuring materials, equipment, and services required to support ship repair, shipbuilding, and maritime operations. This role ensures timely acquisition of parts and services in compliance with contract requirements, quality standards, and cost objectives. The Purchasing Agent works closely with project managers, engineering, warehouse, and vendors to support vessel availabilities and operational schedules.
Key Responsibilities
- Procure materials, equipment, and services to support maritime projects and vessel availabilities
- Source and evaluate suppliers for marine-grade parts, equipment, and services
- Issue purchase orders in accordance with company policies and contract requirements
- Track order status and expedite materials to meet project schedules
- Coordinate with project management, engineering, and warehouse teams to verify specifications and delivery needs
- Ensure compliance with contractual, quality, and regulatory requirements (NAVSEA, MIL-STD, ABS, Coast Guard, etc., as applicable)
- Review vendor quotes for accuracy, lead time, and cost competitiveness
- Resolve discrepancies related to pricing, delivery, quality, or documentation
- Maintain accurate procurement records and documentation
- Support audits, inspections, and government reporting requirements
- Identify cost-saving opportunities and supplier performance improvements
Required Qualifications
- High school diploma or equivalent required; associate or bachelor’s degree preferred
- 3 years of purchasing or procurement experience in maritime, shipyard, manufacturing, or industrial environments
- Familiarity with marine materials, ship repair parts, and vendor lead times
- Strong understanding of procurement processes, purchase orders, and inventory control
- Proficient in ERP/MRP systems and Microsoft Office (Excel, Outlook)
- Strong organizational, communication, and problem-solving skills
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience supporting U.S. Navy, NAVSEA, or defense-related maritime programs
- Knowledge of government contracting and flow-down requirements
- Experience with emergency or short-notice procurement for shipyard operations
- Ability to obtain or maintain a DoD security clearance
Work Environment
- Office-based with frequent coordination with shipyard and warehouse personnel
- Fast-paced environment with shifting priorities and strict deadlines
- Occasional on-site shipyard or vendor visits
Pay: $30.00 - $40.00 per hour
