Work Location: In person
Schedule: Assigned shifts may be scheduled Monday through Saturday between 4:00 a.m. and 9:00 p.m. Employees work a regular assigned shift within this operating window and are not scheduled for the entire 17-hour period.

Lawton Area Transit System is seeking a skilled, dependable, and safety-focused Diesel Mechanic / Fleet Maintenance Technician to inspect, diagnose, maintain, and repair diesel-powered transit buses and fleet vehicles.

This position is an excellent opportunity for a mechanic with experience in diesel repair, automotive service, commercial vehicles, heavy-duty trucks, military vehicles, heavy equipment, bus maintenance, or fleet maintenance.

As a member of the LATS maintenance team, your work will directly support safe and reliable public transportation throughout Lawton. Every inspection, repair, and preventative-maintenance service helps keep our vehicles road-ready and our community moving.

What You’ll Work On

  • Diesel-powered transit buses and fleet vehicles
  • Diesel engines and related mechanical systems
  • Air brake and hydraulic brake systems
  • Electrical, charging, starting, battery, and lighting systems
  • Steering and suspension components
  • Tires, wheels, belts, hoses, filters, and fluid systems
  • Cooling and lubrication systems
  • Preventative-maintenance inspections
  • Mechanical and electrical diagnostics
  • Vehicle safety equipment and fleet-readiness concerns

Primary Responsibilities

  • Inspect, diagnose, service, maintain, and repair diesel buses and fleet vehicles
  • Perform scheduled preventative maintenance and vehicle safety inspections
  • Diagnose mechanical, electrical, braking, steering, suspension, and performance-related concerns
  • Complete oil changes, lubrication services, filter replacements, fluid checks, and routine maintenance
  • Inspect and repair brakes, suspension components, steering systems, tires, batteries, lighting, belts, hoses, and safety equipment
  • Use diagnostic tools, shop equipment, technical procedures, and mechanical knowledge to identify vehicle problems
  • Identify developing mechanical issues before they result in breakdowns or service interruptions
  • Repair or replace damaged, worn, or defective vehicle components
  • Assist with road calls, breakdowns, and urgent fleet-readiness repairs when needed
  • Accurately document inspections, maintenance services, repairs, labor, parts usage, and unresolved concerns
  • Communicate repair progress, vehicle conditions, safety concerns, and parts needs to supervisors
  • Maintain a clean, organized, and safety-compliant maintenance shop
  • Follow all safety procedures, shop requirements, equipment standards, and company policies
  • Help ensure buses and fleet vehicles remain safe, dependable, and available for scheduled service

Minimum Qualifications

  • One year of professional mechanical experience preferred
  • Equivalent diesel-technology education, military maintenance experience, technical training, or demonstrated mechanical ability may be considered
  • Experience in automotive repair, diesel repair, heavy-equipment maintenance, commercial truck repair, bus maintenance, military vehicle maintenance, or fleet service
  • Demonstrated mechanical aptitude and vehicle-troubleshooting ability
  • Working knowledge of brakes, steering, suspension, tires, batteries, electrical systems, fluid systems, and preventative maintenance
  • Ability to safely operate hand tools, power tools, shop equipment, vehicle lifts, and diagnostic equipment
  • Ability to follow written maintenance procedures and technical instructions
  • Ability to accurately complete inspection reports, repair orders, and maintenance documentation
  • Strong attention to detail and commitment to vehicle safety
  • Dependable attendance, punctuality, accountability, and professional work habits
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a maintenance team
  • Valid driver’s license and an acceptable driving record
  • Ability to meet all required employment-screening, background-check, and drug-testing requirements

Preferred Qualifications

The following qualifications are highly valued but are not required for every applicant:

  • Diesel or heavy-duty vehicle repair experience
  • Transit bus or commercial fleet maintenance experience
  • Diesel engine diagnostics and repair experience
  • Air brake inspection, diagnosis, adjustment, and repair experience
  • Electrical system troubleshooting experience
  • Preventative maintenance and fleet inspection experience
  • DOT commercial vehicle inspection knowledge
  • ASE or recognized automotive or diesel technician certifications
  • Formal diesel technology, automotive technology, or heavy-equipment training
  • Class A or Class B Commercial Driver’s License
  • Passenger endorsement
  • Military vehicle maintenance experience
  • Experience using computerized diagnostic tools or fleet-maintenance software

Compensation and Overtime

  • Starting pay is $19.13 per hour
  • Approved overtime is paid at one-and-one-half times the employee’s regular hourly rate
  • Employees receive paid federal holidays

Uniforms, Tools, and Equipment

  • LATS provides mechanic uniforms
  • Uniforms are professionally washed and cleaned weekly
  • LATS provides major shop equipment and diagnostic equipment
  • Employees should be prepared to provide standard personal hand tools

Physical and Work Requirements

Candidates must be able to perform the essential functions of a fleet-maintenance position, including:

  • Standing, bending, kneeling, reaching, climbing, and working beneath or inside fleet vehicles
  • Safely lifting, carrying, moving, and positioning tools, parts, and equipment required for assigned repairs
  • Working around diesel engines, oils, fluids, noise, fumes, and changing shop temperatures
  • Wearing and properly using required personal protective equipment
  • Working safely in a commercial fleet-maintenance environment
