Diesel Mechanic / Fleet Maintenance Technician

Lawton Area Transit System is seeking a skilled and dependable Diesel Mechanic / Fleet Maintenance Technician to support the maintenance and repair of our public transportation fleet in Lawton, Oklahoma.

This position is a great opportunity for a hands-on mechanic who enjoys working on diesel vehicles, transit buses, fleet equipment, and heavy-duty systems. The ideal candidate will have strong mechanical ability, attention to detail, and a commitment to keeping vehicles safe, reliable, and ready for daily service.

As a Diesel Mechanic with LATS, you will play a key role in supporting safe public transportation for the Lawton community by inspecting, diagnosing, repairing, and maintaining transit vehicles and related equipment.

About the Position

The Diesel Mechanic / Fleet Maintenance Technician is responsible for performing routine maintenance, safety inspections, mechanical repairs, and troubleshooting on diesel-powered buses and fleet vehicles. This role requires mechanical knowledge, problem-solving skills, and the ability to work in a fast-paced maintenance environment.

This is an important behind-the-scenes position that helps ensure our buses remain safe, clean, dependable, and ready to serve passengers every day.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities

Inspect, diagnose, service, and repair diesel buses and fleet vehicles.

Perform preventative maintenance on transit vehicles and related equipment.

Complete oil changes, lubrication, filter replacements, belt replacements, hose repairs, and fluid checks.

Inspect and repair brakes, suspension components, steering systems, tires, batteries, lights, and safety equipment.

Assist with identifying mechanical issues before they become major service problems.

Troubleshoot vehicle concerns using mechanical knowledge, diagnostic tools, and maintenance procedures.

Document repairs, inspections, service work, and maintenance needs accurately.

Communicate vehicle concerns, needed parts, and repair updates to supervisors.

Maintain a safe, clean, and organized maintenance work area.

Follow all safety procedures, shop rules, company policies, and equipment handling standards.

Support daily fleet readiness by helping keep buses available for scheduled service.

Qualifications

Diesel mechanic experience preferred.

Fleet maintenance, heavy-duty vehicle repair, bus maintenance, truck repair, or automotive repair experience is a plus.

Knowledge of diesel engines, brakes, suspension, electrical systems, steering, tires, and preventative maintenance is preferred.

Must be mechanically inclined and able to troubleshoot equipment issues.

Must be dependable, punctual, and safety-minded.

Must be able to follow instructions, complete documentation, and work as part of a team.

Must be able to use hand tools, power tools, shop equipment, and diagnostic equipment safely.

Must be able to work in a maintenance shop environment.

Must be able to pass required employment screening, background check, and drug testing.
