Position Description
The Custodian position provides a high level of customer service to all members of the campus and community by performing a variety of custodial tasks and duties. Key responsibilities include cleaning, maintaining clean and orderly appearance inside of buildings, trash removal, and snow and ice removal. This position interacts frequently with staff, students, faculty, and Guests. This position is full-time at 40 hours per week. The following are shifts available for the position, subject to change based on Björklunden event needs.
- 7:00 am – 3:30 pm
- 8:00 am – 4:30 pm
Job Responsibilities and Accountabilities
- Actively engage all Björklunden constituents including donors, prospective students,
- Volunteers, parents of students, etc. to promote a positive attitude towards Björklunden
and Lawrence University.
- Responsible for cleaning the Lodge, Studio, Chapel after events and as needed.
- Responsible for creating a procedure for deep cleaning on an annual basis.
- Daily walk through to check and clean restrooms where necessary and replenish dispensers (paper, soap, etc.).
- Daily walk through to check and clean where necessary all Public Areas – including entryways.
- Remove and properly dispose of trash and recyclables in outside dumpster containers.
- Remove snow and ice from outside walkways and entryways per Maintenance Tech.
- Make minor repairs as needed (replacement of light bulbs, etc.)
- Assist with special projects on an as needed basis
- Assist with hosting day groups, retreats, luncheons, and other scheduled events that require meal preparation, cleaning, and guest engagement as needed.
- Perform housekeeping/kitchen/serving duties as needed.
- Be available to assist Maintenance Coordinator with general maintenance and landscaping duties.
- Serve as a back-up for other Björklunden team members as appropriate.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Knowledge and Skills Required
- Possess the ability to work independently with minimal direction.
- Key attributes: self-motivated, team-oriented, reliability, collegiality, flexibility.
- Exceptional problem-solving, organizational, prioritization and follow-up skills.
- Must be able to climb a 12 ft. stepladder.
- Must be able to lift 50 lbs.
- Ability to learn to use equipment i.e. small hand tools, vacuums, etc.
- Must be able to read and follow instructions, directions, and safety procedures.
- Must be available for after hours, weekend, and call-in duties.
Education and Work Experience
- High school diploma or equivalent preferred, but not necessary.
- Previous custodial/janitorial experience preferred, but not necessary.
