Job Description
We have an opening for a Graphic Designer to support LLNL’s Laboratory Infrastructure (LI) Program where teams of experts work together to create complex visuals for a diverse range of communications products and media. We are looking for exceptionally talented, creative, and strategic graphic designers with relevant professional experience and solid skills and talent in print, graphics, event, and web production. You will use your creative talents to create publications, brochures, posters, illustrations, web content, and dynamic presentations for technical and non-technical audiences. This position is in the Technical Information Department matrixed to the Laboratory Infrastructure group.
You will
Apply originality to create, plan, direct, and coordinate production decisions for various content to be used in presentations, displays, signage, events, publications, websites, and multimedia projects using a variety of computer software and conventional tools.
Establish standards for quality of work, guidelines, techniques or procedures; oversee projects from receipt to completion, coordinate work with other team members; estimate time and cost, choose appropriate work methods, and may set work priorities and production schedules.
Partner with the LI communication manager and technical experts on special projects involving presentations, event production, and development of graphics.
Collaborate and interact with all levels of administrative, management, and scientific staff including other clients/editors to understand, define, develop, and establish objectives to meet the design specification requirements for highly visible or large complex graphic projects and publications, frequently responsible for initial customer contact and consultation.
Communicate frequently with communication manager about workload, project planning and status, and deviations in project costs and progress.
Solve complex problems and function as a graphic design expert, advising technical experts, demonstrating methods and procedures, performing ongoing quality control checks, making routine commitments related to assignments, and interpreting guidelines and procedures.
Perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
Ability to secure and maintain a U.S. DOE Q-level security clearance which requires U.S. citizenship.
Bachelor’s Degree in Graphic Design, Multimedia, Animation, Web Design, or related field, or equivalent combination of education and significant related experience in graphic design and illustration or related field.
Ability to conceptualize and effectively design, plan, direct, and coordinate production of multiple and complex graphic design and multimedia design projects using advanced knowledge of computer programs and design methods.
Advanced knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite, Adobe Creative Suite (Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign, XD, Dreamweaver), and CMS (WordPress, Drupal) and applying UI/UX design methodology. Relevant knowledge in the use of design concepts and typography principles.
Experience leading large print production and multimedia projects; and experience establishing production team commitments of cost, schedule, and quality for communication projects.
Experience communicating conceptual ideas and advanced understanding of current industry standards for print, presentation, and web, and UX design principles and methodology.
Problem-solving and decision-making skills necessary to independently recommend appropriate actions and solutions. Excellent attention to detail and critical thinking skills and ability to manage timelines and shift priorities to support workload demands.
Advanced interpersonal, written and verbal communication skills necessary to interact tactfully and effectively with a diverse group of personalities, disciplines, and customers. Experience working within a team and building relationships with customers.
Qualifications We Desire
Experience working within production teams that are comprised of both communicators and scientists or engineers.
Experience with event planning and execution, project management, and asset management.
Strong written communications skills, including the ability to craft messaging about complex technical topics for broad audiences.
