Position Summary
This is a full-time position (35 hr. per week) Monday- Friday, 8:00 am to 4:00pm
This is a dual role position. Health Education responsibilities will be the primary focus of the position, with LPN‑specific tasks serving as secondary duties.
The Public Health LPN/Health Educator provides direct clinical support in community settings while delivering evidence-based health education to diverse populations. This role supports immunization clinics, communicable disease control, maternal/child health, and health promotion programs.
Key Responsibilities
Health Education & Outreach (Primary role)
· Conduct public speaking engagements.
· Develop and deliver health education for individuals, families, and community groups.
· Meet contract deliverables set forth in the MCH (Maternal Child Health) work plan
· Support the Child Passenger Safety Program by attending training to become a Certified Child Passenger Safety Technician to assist families with car seat distribution, installation and education.
· Collaborate with community organizations, schools, and other partners to expand outreach and participation.
· Create social media messages to promote, inform and educate the community about services and public health related topics.
· Other duties as assigned.
Clinical/Public Health Duties (Secondary role)
· Administer vaccines (children and adult) and medications (STI, TB and birth control) per standing orders and protocol.
· Perform testing and screenings such as blood pressure, sexually transmitted infections, TB skin tests, lab draws, pregnancy tests.
· Maintain accurate records and follow confidentiality (HIPAA) and public health reporting requirements.
· Support communicable disease investigations, contact tracing, and follow-up; provide counseling on isolation, treatment adherence, and prevention.
· Participate in public health emergency response (e.g., mass vaccination, emerging infections).
· Maintain vaccine cold chain integrity and clinic readiness (stocking, logs, equipment safety).
· Other duties as assigned
Program & Quality Improvement
· Contribute to program planning, goals, and metrics; assist with grant deliverables and reporting.
· Maintain up-to-date knowledge of state immunization schedules, AAP/ACIP guidelines, and public health best practices.
· Uphold safety and infection control standards; identify risks and propose mitigations.
Minimum Qualifications
· Must be a Licensed Practical Nurse licensed in Missouri and in good standing.
· 1–3 years of clinical experience; public/community health experience is preferred.
· Experience providing patient education.
· Current BLS/CPR certification.
· Valid driver’s license; ability to travel locally for outreach/clinics.
· Comfortable with public speaking
Preferred Qualifications
· Research, development and implementation of health education programs.
· Experience in immunization clinics, school health, FQHCs, or local public health.
· Knowledge of communicable disease control, chronic disease management, and health equity frameworks.
· Familiarity with AAP/ACIP immunization guidelines, HIPAA, and state public health reporting.
· Public speaking experience to groups of all ages
Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
· Knowledge of principles, philosophy, practices and specialized equipment utilized in community health nursing.
· Knowledge of case management, lead poisoning prevention; HIV/AIDS/STD prevention counseling and testing, immunization schedules and updates, TB testing and disease processes, communicable disease processes.
· Skills in public speaking, planning, and organization
· Skills in venipuncture and injections in adults, children and infants.
· Skills in capillary blood collections for lead and hemoglobin in children.
· Ability to understand and carry out technical procedures.
· Ability to maintain patient confidentiality.
· Ability to work with the general public and co-workers.
· Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
· Ability to prioritize, be adaptable, and diverse.
· Ability to become familiar with local and state health guidelines.
· Ability to work independently.
· Must have a high level of competency.
· Visual and hearing acuity are a must.
· Eye-hand coordination imperative.
· Valid driver’s license required.
· Current, active State of Missouri Licensed Practical Nurse license required and ability to certify under state programs.
· One to three years of experience in a related field preferred.
· Ability to acquire appropriate certifications through Missouri Department of Health & Senior Services or MO-DHSS (HIV prevention/counseling, temp Medicaid, principles of epidemiology).
· Ability to obtain and maintain BLS (Basic Life Support) for the Healthcare Professional certification.
· Knowledge of Spanish Language helpful but not required
Material and Equipment Directly Used
Operates a personal computer, printer and various software packages, and other
general office materials and equipment such as a copier, fax, and telephone. Uses a
variety of specialized health assessment and treatment equipment, materials and
medicines such as syringes, blood pressure equipment, blood sample collection
equipment, and pregnancy tests etc.
