Position Overview
The Mandarin Teacher leads developmentally appropriate Chinese language and culture instruction for students in K-8th Grade on a recurring or as-needed basis. The ideal candidate is a skilled language educator with native or near-native fluency in Mandarin Chinese, the flexibility to teach across a broad developmental range, and the cultural depth to bring China's traditions, literature, and contemporary life into the classroom in age-appropriate ways.
The Per Diem Mandarin Teacher works closely with classroom teachers and administrators to deliver a cohesive language program and to contribute meaningfully to the life of the school on the days they are on campus.
Key Responsibilities
- Deliver developmentally appropriate Mandarin Chinese lessons that build listening, speaking, reading, and writing proficiency across K-8th Grade.
- Teach Chinese language alongside cultural literacy — including traditions, holidays, history, geography, art, and music — in ways that are engaging and accurate.
- Use proficiency-based, communicative methods appropriate to young learners and adolescents.
- Introduce students to Chinese characters (Simplified), pinyin, tones, and stroke order with age-appropriate pacing.
- Adapt instruction to diverse learning styles and abilities within mixed-experience groups.
- Maintain an organized, inviting learning environment with thoughtful use of authentic materials and learning technology.
- Communicate progress and observations to the lead classroom teacher and administration as appropriate.
- Maintain accurate records of student attendance and progress for assigned sessions.
- Contribute to school cultural events and interdisciplinary moments where Mandarin instruction adds value (e.g., Lunar New Year, International Day).
Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Chinese, Chinese Education, World Languages, Linguistics, or a related field required.
- Native or near-native fluency in Mandarin Chinese, with strong written and spoken English.
- NYS Teaching Certification in Chinese preferred.
- Prior teaching experience in a school setting (independent or public), with elementary and/or middle school students, strongly preferred.
- Strong classroom and behavior management skills.
- Familiarity with proficiency-based language teaching frameworks (ACTFL, TPRS, CI methods) is a plus.
- Reliability, professionalism, and flexibility with scheduling.

- Language and Pedagogy: Native or near-native command of Mandarin Chinese paired with the ability to teach fundamental skills, characters, and cultural concepts in age-appropriate ways.
- Classroom Presence: Warmth, structure, and the ability to engage students from young children through middle schoolers, often on a recurring per-day basis.
- Cultural Depth: A teacher who brings Chinese language and culture into the classroom with accuracy, nuance, and care.
- Flexibility: Comfort with a per-diem rhythm — building rapport quickly, integrating into an established school culture, and maintaining quality across variable scheduling.
Schedule and Compensation
- Schedule: Per diem, on-campus. Assignment days and frequency determined in coordination with the school. 1 -2 days / week
- Hours per day: Aligned to the school day, typically 7:45 AM – 3:45 PM
- Compensation: Daily rate commensurate with experience and qualifications.
