School Nurse — Laurel Hill School

Full-Time, 12-Month | On-Campus | East Setauket, NY Start Date: As Soon As Possible

About Laurel Hill School
Laurel Hill School is a leading independent school on Long Island, serving students from infancy through Grade 8 on a ten-acre campus. We operate year-round, with our academic program from September through June and a summer day camp for children ages 5–15. Our community is warm and close-knit, with small class sizes and faculty who are deeply valued for their expertise, professionalism, and care for children.

Position Overview
The School Nurse leads the day-to-day operations of the Laurel Hill Health Office and serves as the primary clinical resource for students, families, and staff across both the academic year and summer camp season. The Nurse is responsible for student health and wellness, medication administration, allergy and emergency response, immunization and physical examination compliance, annual health screenings, and the maintenance of accurate, confidential health records.

This is a full-time, twelve-month position serving children from preschool through Grade 8 during the academic year and campers ages 5–15 during the summer. The ideal candidate is an experienced pediatric or school nurse who brings clinical confidence, a calm bedside manner, and meticulous attention to documentation — someone children trust on a hard day and parents trust with the details.

Key Responsibilities

Health Office Operations

  • Manage the daily operations of the Laurel Hill Health Office, including triage, treatment, and follow-up for students presenting with illness or injury.
  • Maintain a clean, organized, and well-stocked health office and ensure clinical supplies, AED equipment, and emergency medications are current and accessible.
  • Maintain complete, confidential, and well-organized health records for every enrolled student and camper in accordance with school policy and applicable law.

Medication Administration

  • Administer prescription and over-the-counter medications in accordance with the school's Medication Administration Form, requiring both physician and parent signatures.
  • Verify all medications are in their original, labeled containers and stored securely.
  • Document each administration accurately and notify families as appropriate.

Allergy & Anaphylaxis Management

  • Maintain individualized Allergy Action Plans on file for every student with a diagnosed food allergy or risk of anaphylaxis.
  • Oversee the storage, accessibility, and administration of EpiPens and other emergency medications.
  • Brief and train staff in contact with allergic students on emergency recognition and response.

Health Screenings & Compliance

  • Conduct annual vision, hearing, and scoliosis screenings in accordance with New York State requirements, and notify families of any concerns warranting follow-up.
  • Track and verify immunization records under New York Public Health Law and ensure every student is in compliance prior to attendance.
  • Track and verify physical examination records for new enrollees and for students entering Kindergarten and Grades 1, 3, 5, and 7.

Emergency Response & Staff Training

  • Serve as the first responder for accidents, injuries, and acute illness on campus.
  • Maintain and conduct routine checks on the school's three on-campus AEDs.
  • Train faculty and staff in basic first aid, CPR, and emergency response procedures, including during new-employee onboarding.
  • Fulfill the Nurse's designated role during fire drills, lockdown drills, and other emergency procedures, including supervision of students present in the Health Office at the time of an alarm.

Family Communication

  • Contact parents and guardians promptly in the event of illness or injury, and document the communication in the student's record.
  • Serve as the primary point of contact for families on matters of student health, medication, allergies, and accommodations.

Summer Camp Coverage

  • Serve as the designated Health Director for the Laurel Hill Summer Camp program, in accordance with New York State children's camp regulations.
  • Provide on-site clinical coverage during the summer camp season for children ages 5–15, including daily medication administration, injury and illness response, and oversight of camper health records.
  • Coordinate with the Executive Camp Director on health-related camp policies, allergy management, and emergency preparedness.

Qualifications

  • Current New York State Registered Nurse (RN) license, in good standing.
  • Current BLS/CPR certification (or willingness to obtain prior to start).
  • Pediatric, school, or camp nursing experience strongly preferred.
  • Familiarity with New York State school health requirements, including immunization law, mandatory screenings, and medication administration protocols.
  • Demonstrated experience managing food allergies, anaphylaxis, and emergency medication protocols in a school or pediatric setting.
  • Excellent clinical judgment, calm under pressure, and a warm, reassuring presence with children of all ages.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the discretion required to handle confidential health information.
  • Meticulous documentation habits and comfort with electronic health and student information systems.
