Position Overview
The Lower School Teacher plans and delivers a rigorous, engaging, and developmentally appropriate academic program across the elementary grades. This is a fixed-term position for the 2026–2027 academic year. The specific homeroom grade assignment will be confirmed prior to the start of the school year; candidates should be prepared and enthusiastic to teach at any level from Kindergarten through Grade 5.
As a homeroom teacher, this individual will serve as the primary point of contact for their class community — building relationships with students and families, managing daily routines, and setting the tone for their students' school experience. Laurel Hill's small class sizes allow for genuinely individualized instruction, a defining feature of the Lower School experience.

Key Responsibilities
Curriculum & Instruction
- Plan and deliver daily instruction across core subject areas including literacy, mathematics, social studies, and science, aligned with LHS curriculum standards.
- Design lessons that are differentiated, engaging, and responsive to the needs of individual learners across the K–5 range.
- Integrate hands-on, project-based, and inquiry-driven learning experiences throughout the school year.
- Submit written lesson plans as required by administration.
Assessment & Communication
- Assess and monitor student progress on an ongoing basis, using data to inform instruction and intervention.
- Provide timely, constructive feedback to students and maintain accurate records of academic performance.
- Communicate proactively with families regarding student progress, concerns, and achievements.
- Document all parent communications and submit to administration as required.
Collaboration & School Life
- Work collaboratively with specialist teachers, learning support staff, and administration to support the academic, social, and emotional development of the whole child.
- Attend and actively participate in faculty meetings, Back-to-School Night, parent-teacher conferences, school performances, and professional development.
- Contribute to a warm, inclusive, and high-achieving Lower School community consistent with the mission and values of Laurel Hill School.
Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Elementary Education or a related field required; Master's degree preferred.
- NYS Teaching Certification in Elementary Education (Grades 1–6) preferred; Birth–Grade 2 certification accepted for candidates open to lower grade placement.
- Prior teaching experience in a school setting (independent or public) strongly preferred, ideally at the elementary level.
- Strong foundational knowledge of literacy and mathematics instruction, including evidence-based practices.
- Enthusiasm for working with young learners and flexibility to teach effectively across Kindergarten through Grade 5.
- Demonstrated commitment to collaboration, professionalism, and continual growth.
Conditions of Employment
- Submission of a copy of teaching certification and official transcripts required prior to first day.
- Submission of initial unit and lesson plans required prior to first day, as directed by administration.
- Background check and fingerprinting required prior to hire, in accordance with NYS requirements.
What We Offer
- Salary: $52,000–$56,000, commensurate with experience and qualifications, paid bi-weekly.

Schedule
- Full-time, on-campus position running September 2026 through June 2027, in alignment with the Laurel Hill School academic calendar.
- Hours: 7:45 AM – 3:45 PM, Monday through Friday.
