Role Overview
Role
The Principal Cloud FinOps Analyst is the enterprise owner of the company’s cloud financial management practice. This role sits within Cloud Services and partners closely with Delivery Centers, Architecture & Engineering, Data & Analytics, and Finance to:
- Maximize the business value of the company’s cloud spending
- Improve transparency, accountability, and predictability of cloud costs
- Drive a culture of shared responsibility for cloud efficiency across engineering, Product/DC, and Finance
Key responsibilities
- FinOps Strategy, Governance, and Operating Model
- Own and evolve the company’s FinOps strategy and roadmap, aligned to technology and corporate financial objectives
- Define and maintain FinOps policies, standards, exceptions, and guardrails (e.g. tagging, cost allocation, reserved capacity, anomaly thresholds, optimization acceptance criteria)
- Lead the FinOps governance cadence, including monthly cloud cost and budget reviews, optimization and savings tracking and reviews, and executive-ready reporting packages for CIO Staff meetings
- Champion the FinOps cultural shift by communicating principles, success stories, and expectations across engineering, product, and finance teams.
- Cloud Transparency, Allocation, and Reporting
- Inform and maintain a service-based cost allocation model.
- Ensure high-quality tagging and metadata across cloud environments; partner with Architecture & Engineering and leverage governance tools to enforce tagging standards
- Partner with Data & Analytics teams to develop and refine dashboards and reports to provide spend by Delivery Center, team, service, region, and environment, variance vs. budget and forecast, and unit costs and efficiency KPIs
- Partner with Finance to reconcile cloud invoices and internal cost data, supporting budgeting, forecasting and chargeback/showback models
- Budgeting, Forecasting, and Financial Planning Integration
- Support the bottom-up cloud forecasting process with Delivery Center leaders, ensuring alignment with IT and corporate financial plans
- Provide scenario modeling and “what-if” analysis to support new initiatives, migrations, and scaling decisions
- Establish and monitor variance targets (e.g. forecast vs. Actual by month/quarter) and work with Delivery Centers to remediate significant deviations
- Optimization Backlog & Savings Realizations
- Build and manage an enterprise-wide cost-optimization backlog, sourced from automated governance tools, engineers, and architects, usage analytics and vendor recommendations
- Facilitate regular backlog review and prioritization sessions with Cloud Services and Delivery Centers
- Work with engineers to size and validate optimization opportunities
- Ensure Implementation stories include pre- and post- measurement to verify savings and performance impact
- Maintain a savings ledger/tracker with monthly, quarterly, and annual run-rate savings, including attribution back to teams and initiatives
- Tooling, Automation, & Data Quality
- Own the FinOps tooling ecosystem in partnership with Cloud Services & Data Analytics (e.g. Cloud-native cost tools, governance platforms, optimization and analytics platforms)
- Collaborate with data engineers/analysts to maintain robust data pipelines feeding FinOps dashboards and reports
- Drive automation for cost and usage data ingestion and normalization, alerting on anomalies and policy violations
- Partner with Security, Compliance, and Architecture to ensure FinOps tools and datasets meet the company’s Standards
- Stakeholder Engagement and Enablement
- Serve as the primary FinOps point of contact for Delivery Center leaders and ADLs, Cloud Architecture and Engineering teams, Finance, Procurement, and Vendor Management
- Lead workshops and training sessions on FinOps concepts, optimization techniques, budgeting/forecasting expectations, and dashboard usage
- Vendor and Contract Optimization
- Partner with Procurement and Finance on cloud and SaaS contract strategy, including discount and commitment programs, reserved instances/savings plans, and enterprise agreements
- Provide data-driven recommendations for commitment levels, renewal terms, and consolidation opportunities
- People Leadership and Practice Growth
- Directly manage and mentor FinOps analyst(s) and over time, dedicated cost optimization engineers
- Foster a high-performance, learning-oriented FinOps practice, with clear career paths, skills development, and cross-training with Cloud Services and Data & Analytics
- Lead internal communities of practice for cost optimization, sharing playbooks, patterns, and templates across teams
- Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience; Master’s degree preferred.
- 7 years of experience across cloud financial management, cloud engineering/operations, and/or technology-focused finance/FP&A, with at least 3 years in a FinOps or cloud cost-management-focused role
- Demonstrated experience leading a FinOps practice or cloud cost optimization program in a complex, multi-team environment
- Strong understanding of public cloud platforms (e.g. AWS, Azure, GCP) billing, pricing models, and cost drivers
- Hands-on experience with cloud cost management tools and dashboards; Native cloud tools, Commercial FinOps platforms, or equivalent analytics stacks. Working knowledge of/expertise in Apptio, Cloudability, ProsperOps, Stacklet or similar tools is strongly preferred
- Proven ability to work across engineering, product, finance, and leadership teams to drive change and deliver measurable outcomes
- Advanced analytical skills, including working proficiency with Excel and at least one analytics/BI Platform (e.g. PowerBI, Tableau) as well as with querying data (SQL or similar)
- Strong communication skills, including the ability to translate complex cost and technical concepts into clear, business-oriented narratives for Senior Leadership.
- Experience designing and running governance processes (e.g. monthly reviews, quarterly planning, optimization backlogs)
- Experience in insurance, reinsurance, or other financial services organizations
- Familiarity with the FinOps Framework and its capabilities; FinOps Certified Practitioner, or FinOps Certified Professional is strongly preferred
- Prior leadership of cross-functional optimization initiatives involving architecture changes, modernization/migration, or application rationalization
- Experience managing or mentoring analysts and engineers in a matrixed environment
- Exposure to chargeback/showback models, Technology Business Management (TBM) or related cost allocation frameworks
- Strategic and system thinker – sees the big picture across technology, finance, and business outcomes
