Position Summary

The Director of Finance is a key member of the leadership team, responsible for stewarding the financial health and sustainability of Laughlin Children’s Center. Managing an annual operating budget of approximately $3 million, the Director of Finance oversees all accounting functions, budgeting, financial planning and analysis, grant and contract compliance, insurance, and risk management.

This individual ensures that financial operations align with the organization’s mission-driven goals while maintaining compliance with nonprofit accounting standards, regulatory requirements, and best practices.

Key Responsibilities

Financial Management & Strategy

  • Develop and oversee the annual budget in collaboration with the Executive Director, Department Heads and Director of Programs and People.
  • Provide monthly, quarterly, and annual financial reporting to the Executive Director, Finance Committee, and Board of Directors.
  • Monitor budget performance and cash flow, identifying risks and opportunities.
  • Support financial planning for strategic initiatives and long-term sustainability.
  • Provide guidance on pricing, fee structures, and financial aid policies to ensure access and equity.

Accounting & Compliance

  • Oversee general ledger maintenance, monthly closings, reconciliations, and preparation of financial statements.
  • Ensure compliance with GAAP and nonprofit accounting standards.
  • Coordinate annual audit and 990 preparations with external auditors.
  • Maintain systems for restricted/unrestricted funding and grant tracking.
  • Ensure compliance with funding agreements, insurance billing, and regulatory requirements.

Grants & Contracts

  • Work closely with development and program staff to support budgeting for grant proposals.
  • Track restricted funds and ensure timely and accurate financial reporting to funders.
  • Ensure financial practices support proper documentation and accountability for insurance reimbursements.

Operations & Risk Management

  • Manage banking relationships, cash management, and investments.
  • Maintain internal controls and financial policies to safeguard assets.
  • Oversee risk management strategies, including insurance policies, vendor contracts, and data protection.

Qualifications

  • CPA or MBA strongly preferred
  • Minimum 5–7 years of progressive finance experience, nonprofit financial management experience preferred.
  • Familiarity with nonprofit reporting standards, including fund accounting and 990 preparation.
  • Experience managing a budget in the $2–5 million range.
  • Proficiency with accounting software (e.g., QuickBooks) and Excel.
  • Strong analytical, organizational, and communication skills.
  • Experience working in a mission-driven or child-focused organization preferred.

Working Environment

  • Hybrid schedule available, with on-site presence required for meetings, audits, or board reporting.
  • Occasional evening or weekend availability for board or finance committee meetings.
