Position Summary
The Controller is a key leadership role responsible for overseeing all financial operations across a multi-entity organization that includes a trucking and transportation company, a freight brokerage, warehousing operations. This role ensures accurate financial reporting, strong internal controls, and sound fiscal management to support strategic decision-making. The Controller will lead the accounting department, streamline processes, and implement best practices to support each organization’s continued growth.
Key Responsibilities
Financial Management & Reporting
- Manage all day-to-day accounting functions, including A/R, A/P, payroll, general ledger, and month-end close.
- Consolidate financial statements across trucking, brokerage, and warehousing divisions under Laufer Enterprises.
- Prepare and present monthly, quarterly, and annual financial reports and KPIs to leadership.
- Ensure accuracy of P&Ls, balance sheets, and cash flow statements for each business unit.
- Manage budgeting, forecasting, and variance analysis for all operations.
Cost Control & Operational Support
- Develop and maintain cost models for trucking operations, including fuel expenses, maintenance, driver pay, and equipment depreciation, among others.
- Support brokerage margin analysis and profitability tracking.
- Oversee financial management related to warehousing operations, including storage revenue, labor costs, and inventory controls.
- Partner with operations leaders to monitor performance metrics and identify opportunities for efficiency and cost reduction.
Compliance, Controls & Audit
- Ensure compliance with GAAP, federal/state regulatory requirements, and industry-specific financial obligations (e.g., IFTA, IRP, DOT-related financial reporting).
- Assist HR with financials for regulatory compliance requirements
- Maintain strong internal controls and continuously improve accounting policies and procedures.
- Coordinate annual audits, tax filings, and external reporting with third-party CPAs.
Cash Management & Strategy
- Manage cash flow, banking relationships, and credit facilities.
- Monitor working capital, cash flow, collections, and vendor terms across all divisions.
- Provide financial insights and recommendations to support strategic planning, capital investments, and risk management.
Systems & Process Improvement
- Oversee accounting software and financial systems (e.g., TMS (Mcleod), B2E payroll, QuickBooks/Sage Peach Tree).
- Implement automation and process improvements to strengthen reporting accuracy and efficiency.
- Ensure integration and alignment of financial data across trucking, brokerage, and warehouse systems.
Leadership & Team Development
- Manage and mentor accounting staff.
- Foster a culture of accountability, accuracy, continuous improvement, and collaboration.
- Serve as a trusted advisor to leadership with clear, proactive financial insight.
Qualifications
Required
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field.
- 5 years of progressive accounting/finance experience, ideally within transportation, logistics, or warehousing industries.
- Strong understanding of trucking and brokerage financial structures (settlements, margins, fuel, compliance-related costs, etc.).
- Proficiency with accounting, payroll and enterprise systems
- Proven experience managing a department.
- Strong analytical skills and attention to detail.
- Excellent communication and organizational abilities.
Preferred
- CPA or CMA certification.
- Experience with TMS/WMS platforms.
- Prior experience in multi-entity or consolidated reporting environments.
- Exposure to warehousing financial operations.
