Larchmont Yacht Club is one of the most respected private clubs on Long Island Sound, known for its strong traditions, beautiful waterfront setting, and high standards of service. Located just outside New York City on an 11-acre campus, the Club offers a full range of recreational and social programming for its members.
The pool complex is one of the most active areas of the Club during the summer season. It supports daily recreational use, swim instruction, competitive programs, and special events. Maintaining a clean, safe, and well-functioning aquatic facility is essential to the member experience and requires a high level of attention, consistency, and technical knowledge.
Position Summary
The Pool Maintenance & Operator is responsible for the daily operation, maintenance, and safety of the Club’s pool and surrounding facilities. This role ensures that water quality, mechanical systems, and overall pool conditions meet all regulatory standards and Club expectations.
This position is well suited for individuals with hands-on experience in commercial pool operations, including those who have worked at private clubs, municipal pools, schools, or recreational facilities. The role requires strong technical knowledge, independence, and a proactive approach to maintenance and safety.
Key Responsibilities
Water Quality and Chemical Management
- Monitor and maintain proper water chemistry including chlorine, pH, alkalinity, and stabilizer levels
- Perform and record chemical testing multiple times daily in accordance with health regulations
- Apply corrective treatments as needed to maintain safe and balanced water conditions
- Maintain accurate logs for all testing and adjustments
Mechanical Systems and Equipment
- Operate and maintain pool circulation and filtration systems including pumps, filters, valves, and control systems
- Perform routine inspections of all equipment to ensure proper operation
- Backwash filters and monitor pressure levels to maintain efficiency
- Identify and troubleshoot mechanical issues and report concerns promptly
Facility Maintenance and Cleanliness
- Maintain cleanliness of pool decks, drains, skimmers, tiles, and surrounding areas
- Operate pool vacuums and cleaning equipment to ensure water clarity and presentation
- Inspect and maintain ladders, handrails, diving boards, and safety equipment
- Support overall appearance and readiness of the pool environment for daily use
Safety and Compliance
- Follow all New York State and Westchester County health regulations for aquatic facilities
- Handle and store pool chemicals in accordance with OSHA safety standards
- Maintain awareness of potential hazards and address safety concerns immediately
- Communicate with lifeguards and staff to ensure a safe and coordinated environment
Seasonal Operations
- Assist with pool opening and closing procedures at the start and end of the season
- Support preparation of the facility for inspections and peak usage periods
- Maintain consistent communication with the Facilities and Grounds Director regarding operational status
Ideal Background
We are seeking candidates with strong technical and hands-on experience in pool operations. Successful applicants often come from:
- Private clubs or yacht clubs
- Municipal or community pools
- School or university aquatic facilities
- Property maintenance or facilities management roles
- Recreation or aquatics departments
Qualifications
- Minimum of 2 years of experience in commercial or institutional pool maintenance
- Certified Pool Operator (CPO) certification required
- Strong understanding of pool systems including filtration, circulation, and chemical treatment
- Familiarity with New York State health codes and local regulations preferred
- Ability to work independently and manage daily responsibilities with minimal supervision
- Reliable, detail-oriented, and safety-focused
Preferred:
- Experience in a private club or high-use recreational facility
- Basic knowledge of plumbing, electrical, and mechanical systems
- Valid driver’s license
Physical Requirements
- Ability to lift and carry up to 50 pounds
- Ability to stand, walk, bend, climb, and perform physical tasks throughout the shift
- Comfortable working outdoors in varying weather conditions
- Ability to safely handle pool chemicals and equipment
